GOP Slaps Around Dem Congressmen

Posted by Jeff Woods on Mon, Feb 16, 2009 at 5:52 AM

The state GOP is blasting Congressmen John Tanner and Bart Gordon for taking a taxpayer-funded tour of Europe, including stops in Paris, Rome, Vienna and a famed ski town in the Bavarian Alps (which probably looks something like this picture). Tanner is leading a congressional delegation to NATO meetings. GOP flack Bill Hobbs:
While the average American in tough economic times looks for bargains when they travel, Tanner and the delegation will be flying with an entourage of spouses, staffers and military escorts on a military plane at huge expense.

"The estimated average tax cut that middle class Americans will receive for the last six months of the year as part of the bloated 'economic stimulus' package that John Tanner and the Democrats passed in Congress today is $13 a week," said Bill Hobbs, communications director for the Tennessee Republican Party.

"At $13 a week, it would take the average American several years to save up enough money to take their sweetie to Paris for Valentine's Day, but John Tanner and Bart Gordon aren't average Americans," Hobbs said. "They are Democrat congressmen who claim to be fiscal conservatives but are right now jetting off to Europe at taxpayers' expense instead of coming back to Tennessee to explain why they voted for billions of dollars in pork projects and payoffs to special interest groups but only $13 a week for the average middle class taxpayer."

Update: Forrester actually did put out a press release on the stimulus bill that somehow escaped the attention of  the ever-vigilant Pith in the Wind. We take it all back. Hit the rewind button. Forrester's doing a great job.

Its thirst for Democrat-bashing unquenched, the GOP also is hitting Congressman Jim Cooper for voting for the stimulus. We're still waiting for the mighty counter-punches promised by new Democratic Party chair Chip Forrester. In Sunday's Tennessean, Forrester said, "We've not done a good job in Tennessee of communicating that Republicans are really responsible for the economic downturn that is affecting people's lives. If we had done a better job in this whole area of tying the Republican Party to the economic distress, I think we'd be a lot less red."

That's a good point, Chip. You understand the problem. Now, take the next step. This is how it works: You put out a press release and the media picks it up and then you have succeeded in communicating with the public. Get it?

Look, the TNDP hasn't weighed in on the stimuus-- GOP should be smacked around for failing to support the package...
And has't weighed in on supporting the Governor, who's getting smacked around by liberal groups/bloggers on the HHS issue.
This kind of stuff is basic to the role of the state party. It's de minimus. And it's not being done at all, much less being done effectively. Amazing.
Why in the world would the Governor (and his supporters) and the Congressmen (and their supporters) possibly raise money for and support this iteration of the state party?
Get a clue, guys. And read the job description.

What is there to respond to? More paint-by-numbers press releases from Bill Hobbs with his usual "statistic reached by engaging in completely illogical math". It would be one thing if there was something of substance that the TNDP needed to be out there debating. This is just the same, boring noise from Hobbs.
This post is vintage Woods, cramming a square peg into his round hole of an already drawn conclusion....

TNDP - R.I.P.
Everyman is right. The Tennessee Democratic Party doesn't respond to anything anymore. Forrester has killed it. It's in debt. They have no money to hire staff, and I've read that no professionals will work for Forrester. And Forrester is paying himself about $100K a year????? Is he a Republican hitman?
If Democrats in Tennessee have any hope, a new group better start quick.

Good riddance to the Tennessee Democrat Party. The Chipinista brought it on themselves. They were warned about this guy by the adults. You know, that handful of Democrats that have actually won elections in Tennessee, Gordon, Davis, Tanner, Cooper, Bredesen. Even Harold Ford, Jr. warned them about Chipper. But the Chipinista are just smarter than everybody else, I guess. Yeah, rrrreeeeaaallll smart.
Has that blogathon paid Chipper salary for this month yet?

I'd say the TN GOP is doing a perfectly good job of self-destructing. Why bother giving them any more attention? Just because they're provocative doesn't mean that their attacks are having an impact.

After happily spending half a trillion to rebuild Iraq's infrastructure and Iraq's schools, the GOP's elected representatives, clearly have no interest in rebuilding their own country.
Even Corker and Alexander were happy to spend taxpayer money to bail out the Goldman Sachs crowd with no accountability, but when it comes down to helping middle class America, Tennessee Republicans are the ones indifferent to "the average American in tough economic times."

Here's the link to the TNDP's comments on the stimulus. Chip Forrester issued them Monday, Feb. 9.

Woods, why didn't you cover it? Because it's not filled with outrageous lies that you credulously reprint? Shame on you for being wrong, and further shame on you for your worship of idiot Hobbs politics.

I missed Forrester's release somehow. Thanks for pointing it out, Holly. I take it all back.

OMG, I can't stop laughing.
The best response that the Chipinista can muster is to refer to a week-old presser picked up by one blog. First, the Chipper presser was released four days after the events to which it referred. Love that rapid response, Chipper. Then they try to use it as a response to a GOP presser that came out today ON A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SUBJECT.
Man, are the Chipinista taking incompetence to a new level or what?

BTW, it looks like the Chipinista don't know when they issued their presser, which, to my knowledge, is the only presser they have put out. Now they claim it was released on Monday, February 9. That's funny. Kleinheider posted it on Sunday, February 8.
No wonder you didn't see it, Woods. They don't even know when they sent it out. Maybe the morons only sent it to Kleinheider.

Glad to see a press release went out. But, honestly, issuing a press releases is the least one does to communicate a message. And if it's not covered aggressively, you try other avenues and methods to get out your message. No one has heard from the state party on the stimulus. Do an event, do some interviews, cut a radio spot, please, please show that you understand this job and that the stimulus bill is of great importance on political and substantive grounds.

please, please show that you understand this job
You hit the crux of the matter, Everyman: Chip and the Chipinista don't understand the job. Golly gee, they sure wanted to run the party because it's time somebody paid attention to the little people, Beave. Good intentions do not a political operative make.
But, you know, the Democrats were warned.

Hey DG: I don't think this one's on Jeff. Say what you want about Bill Hobbs, but anytime anything even remotely newsworthy happens, he's beaming out instantaneous releases from the Republican Party. You may not like what he says, but the man's on top of his job. By contrast, I don't recall getting even one missive from the Democratic Party since Chip was elected. This seems especially weird, since a lot of small town papers will print these releases verbatim simply because they don't have enough to fill all the space. I think your beef is within, DG, because this is a very remedial part of the job.

You're right on about Hobbs. Say what you will about him - he is weird and he's been fired from every publication in town plus Belmont - but he's found his niche and is on top of press for the GOP.
