This afternoon at 3 p.m.,
Arun Gandhi, grandson of the Mahatma, will be speaking with at the Caudill Hall auditorium on the Vol State campus. In 1991 Gandhi founded the
M.K. Institute for Non-Violence at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, though in 2007 the institute relocated to Rochester, N.Y. He resigned from the institute last year after writing a
blog item for The Washington Post that many construed as ant-Semitic.
He wrote that Jewish identity is "locked into the holocaust experience," which Jews "overplay . . . to the point that it begins to repulse friends." The Jewish nation -- Israel, he wrote -- is too reliant upon weapons and bombs and should instead befriend its enemies...We have created a culture of violence (Israel and the Jews are the biggest players) and that Culture of Violence is eventually going to destroy humanity," Gandhi wrote.
He later apologized for the statement saying, "My intention was to generate a healthy discussion on the proliferation of violence. Clearly I did not achieve my goal. Instead, unintentionally, my words have resulted in pain, anger, confusion and embarrassment."
No word on what his topic of discussion will be today, but given the unrest in the Holy Land lately, you can bet he'll be addressing that topic once again.
