Is Lane Kiffin Responsible for Serbian Genocide?

You might say Vols coach Lane Kiffin is off to a rocky start. First he accused Florida's Urban Meyer of cheating by calling a recruit while the kid was visiting Tennessee. Problem is, there's no rule against this.

And now Kiffin has confessed to his own recruiting violations by staging simulated press conferences for incoming recruits. This apparently runs afoul of the NCAA's ban on creating "game day experiences," whatever that means.

In the realm of deviant behavior, it all has a jaywalking feel. The man's been on the job but a few weeks. Give him a break. But in the world of sport, where no ass is too tight, Kiffin is being treated as if he's responsible for Serbian genocide.

Yesterday CBS columnist Gregg Doyal, the Sean Hannity of sporting commentary, blistered Kiffin as an entitled silver spooner who hadn't earned the right to coach the Vols. Today Paul Finebaum, a columnist for the Press-Register in Alabama, calls for his firing. The piece is so weirdly sphincterific that you suspect Finebaum has a side job compressing scrap metal with his buttocks.

Writes the columnist: "To maintain even a modicum of integrity and respect in the world of college football, Tennessee needs to fire Lane Kiffin as its head football coach. Immediately (if not sooner)."

And if it doesn't?

"
Sports columnists and sports writers will keep hitting refresh on their computer's thesaurus trying to come up with a better description of the Boy Blunder than 'buffoon.'"

OK, so in the world of competitive insults, Finebaum would struggle for a fifth-place showing in most junior high cafeterias. But it's not the invective that's startling. It's the growing denunciation of Kiffin before he's even coached a game. While he may indeed be overmatched by the SEC giants, shouldn't we at least wait to see him lose to Mississippi State before we call it a lock?

That would be a no, according to Finebaum: "Tennessee can act like there isn't a problem with Kiffin. Yet, the big clock is already ticking in Knoxville. Instead of being known as the coach who conquers Urban Meyer and Nick Saban, his nickname will soon be "Lame duck Lane." He might be the first coach in SEC history to be No. 1 on the Coaches' Hot Seat list before even his first spring game."

In conclusion: Don't let Paul Finebaum babysit your kids.

Please do keep him UT. We're just so glad he's yours. Can't wait for what will unfold there.
Enjoy.

kiffin is a total wildcard, which is obfuscating for turds like doyal and finebaum. they don't have a clue how he's going to perform. he'll find his legs soon enough. UT fans might be somewhat nervous that he'll flop.. but no more than opposing SEC fans are nervous he'll be whipping ass in 3 years.
i know he recruited the hell out of one of my alma mater's all-state hotshots, and i for one will be rooting for him to succeed.

I think you're right, alum, he is a total wild card. I have no clue as to how well he'll do. But it's weird how everyone's going ape shit over the guy. His profession isn't exactly one of saints. It seems more like the backlash against a young turk making big moves rather than any major sin committed on his part. Then again, it's offseason and the columnists are scraping for material, so maybe this is just the manufactured outrage of the bored.

My god, this poor guy doesn't even know who will play on the offensive line and they want Gruden to take over. Give him a break, he just graduated college himself. Go get em Lane.

What a relief, the sky may not be falling in Knoxville. In case you have not heard Florida and Alabama, Tennessee went 5-7. You might want to direct that energy at a real threat in 09', LSU. And what's the big deal with "cheater". Act like National Champs. Don't fret over the Vols. At least not this year.

The best(worst) part of Finebaum's argument is that when saying firing Lane Kiffin before he coaches one game wouldn't be unprecedented, he cites former Alabama coach Mike Price as an example.
Yeah, Mike Price. The same guy accused of banging a stripper in a Pensacola hotel room after a golf tournament. That's not really the same as renting a fog machine.

I went to college with Finebaum in Knoxville. We worked at the college paper together. He likes to stir it up. He doesn't believe any of this stuff he's saying.

Nice try! First you admit he unjustly accused Meyer of cheating, then bring up that Kiffin was guilty of a silly, secondary violation. That somehow implies the whole thing is trivial. You can't dilute and deflect attention from his serious affront by throwing up a smokescreen.

Mr.Anonymous, If that's your reeeaal name. The whole thing is quite trivial. Lane said he was sorry, then called himself on a few other violations(obviously did some reading)while being beaten like a dog in the press for screwing up a little. This won't mean jack when the MASTERS tees off.

What a tacky title by Pete Kotz. The Balkan wars were set and staged with the U.S. being a chief factor in promoting racist non-Serb separatists and promoting the ethnic cleansing of Serbs. The census results of Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo show it is the Serbs which were genocided and ethnically cleansed the most and not the over-hyped diarrhea-mouthed false claims of the Muslims and Croats and the mainstream media to promote the NATO/EU anti-Serb agenda.

What does "simulating a gameday experience" mean? Pete, if you've ever seen the movie Hoop Dreams, you have your answer. There's a scene in which Kevin O'Neill, then coach of Marquette (and later of our own UT Vols) is recruiting a star player from Chicago. During the kids visit to Marquette, O'Neill takes him to the coach's office, which overlooks the empty arena. He has created an audiotape simulating a real game, with real crowd noise. The play-by-play announcer is counting down the final seconds, saying "Jones" (I can't remember his actual name) has the ball, he shoots, he scores! Marquette wins!" The faked drama has a big effect on the kid, who signs a letter of intent. This is the kind of stuff the NCAA is trying to stop with the rule you cite.
The juicy irony with Kiffin is that, when all this stuff went down, he was in the process of stealing the kid from Florida, who had verbally committed to the Gators. From what I've read, he had told the kid NOT to tell Urban Meyer about his visit to Knoxville. So when Meyer called him, he had no way of knowing that the kid was there, much less that Kiffin was in hearing distance. But as you say, even had Meyer known where the kid was, there is no rule against him placing a cellphone call. The whole accusation against Meyer was probably meant to rev up the fans who heard it.
Finebaum does indeed like to stir the pot, but who cares what Finebaum thinks? The larger point is that Kiffin was officially reprimanded by the SEC office.
None of this will amount to more than a wart on a junebug's butt if the Vols do well this season, but Kiffy is indeed off to a rocky start.

Wow, And I thought that Alabama fans were crazy. You inbreds from Tennessee are PSYCHOTIC! I never root for florida, but after seeing how you all react and defend this moron kiffin , I hope Florida runs it up on you like never before. Would be great to see tebow toss 2 or 3 td's late in the 4th quarter after leading 44-0 just to piss you all off.

The only thing rocky about Kiff's start is the rocks falling out of a lot of your heads. His entire black list of infractions have been brought forth and dissected. That's all there is. Ol' Urb, on the other hand, has unwittingly found himself being more closely examined by his peers, as has the subject of cheating in the coaching ranks in general, so let's just see if his whining steers his boat in the wrong direction. Popping up in blogs and sports articles across the nation is the mention of an ever-growing list of Meyer's inappropriate scheming......lots of lying and cheating, boys. It goes back to Utah and has continued into this year. Go ahead and ask me and I'll go through a few of them. Odds are, though, you've read the same articles. There are a few astute minds that are amazed at how Meyer is so shallow as to ignore his own glass house. He shouldn't have thrown that rock. More and more elite recruits will be wearing orange at the nation's top NFL prep school. Not too shabby for a rookie.
