House GOP Leaders: 'We're Not Right-Wing Crazies'

House Republican leaders summoned the media today to trumpet their priorities for the 2009 session. Apparently to avoid appearing like moralistic nutjobs--not an easy task--they omitted any mention of those ever-popular "family values" issues. At the presser, God and guns took a backseat to putting education first and doing whatever possible to help small businesses because, as we all know, they are the backbone of the American economy.

Asked about this, GOP leader Jason Mumpower did some fast explaining. Social conservative issues "may not have been mentioned right here at this minute," he said. That's because "this was meant to be a very brief overview of some very key issues. Because we're in the economic times that we're in and because the [governor's] address tonight is going to focus on the budget, we wanted to share some specific thoughts about what we want to do in terms of budget matters, education matters and pro-business matters because we think all three of those things are so integrally tied together in the budget process." Got that?

On other matters, the Republicans said they'll fight the governor's attempt to force wealthy real-estate developers to pay their fair share of taxes. Mumpower: "The governor is proposed a $45 million tax increase, which he's calling loophole closing. But that's just a fancy word for raising taxes and raising taxes in particular on family owned businesses, and that's wrong and we will work to prevent that from happening."

Republicans will push at least a couple of anti-immigration measures--one to require photo IDs for voting and another to let employers require that only English be spoken in the workplace.

Why does Jason Mumpower hate American families?

If the Rep Caucus is so worried about small businesses, why are they so fired up about selling wine in Grocery stores? Grocery stores tend to be big box businesses, correct? Another example of the GOP saying one thing and voting for another. I have another question for Jason Mumpower. Why did you leave college early to go to Louisiana to campaign for David Duke? Why does the TNGOP continue to support Mumpower when they know he campaigned for David Duke? Go to http://www.adl.org/Learn/Ext_US/duke.asp & see if you'd campaign or vote for Mr. Duke?

So we can assume that the Republicans will join with the Democrats and the Governor in funding pre-K programs. Wow, it's good to have the unity known ahead of time.

Really? They're going to sell wine in the grocery store, wow! That would be cool. You can already do that in a lot of the other states. Like Florida for example and it hasn't caused the liquor stores to shut down, down there. So, I say goodie.
