The Best Article About Pat Summitt Ever Written

Last night, the Lady Vols of Tennessee walloped Georgia 73-43. The significance of that seemingly insignificant early-February conference victory? It gave Coach Pat Summitt her 1,000th win. Making her the first college coach, man or woman, ever to hit the millennium mark.

Summitt is, of course, a legend. Thousands of words have been written about her thus far. Thousands more will be written about her in the future. Still, for the best couple thousand, you'd be hard pressed to beat Gary Smith's "Eyes of the Storm" from the March 2, 1998 issue of Sports Illustrated.

Smith's story begins in the living room of a high school All-American Summitt's trying to recruit. While in labor. Not bad for an opener.

Not the century mark, the MILLENIUM mark. Give the lady her due.
