Our Gun Laws Not Nation's Weakest: Let's Work On That

Here's something for our state lawmakers to work on this session. Somehow, we have managed to avoid putting the weakest gun laws in the country on the books. We're only No. 33. That's according to the latest ratings by those pinko communists at the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

Kentucky, Louisiana and Oklahoma score the worst--or the best, should we say?--apparently because they force businesses to allow guns in the workplace. We don't do that yet. What's wrong with us?

We don't do a lot of other things, though, that do help our ratings. A sampling:

Are there limitations on assault weapons? No. Are gun owners held accountable for leaving guns accessible to kids? No. Must child-safety locking devices be sold with guns? No. May police maintain gun sale records? Of course not. Are there limitations on "junk" handguns like Saturday night specials? Are you kidding?

And here's one the Brady group apparently doesn't know about. Unlike other states, Tennessee does not report the names of the dangerously mentally ill to the FBI's background check system. That means any lunatic can waltz out of the insane asylum, go straight to a store and buy a gun. Isn't that great? The governor won't report the names because he says it would cost too much "to aggregate that data."

Anyway, lawmakers should be able move us down that Brady list next year merely by passing that bill allowing handguns in saloons. I'm hoping we'll move to No. 45 with that one. Is that too much to ask for?

Are there limitations on assault weapons? No.
BS. Assault Rifles (if that is what you are referring to) are illegal in Tennessee. The key attribute of any AR is selective or full-auto fire. Selective/FA weapons are illegal w/o a Class 3 permit - which is near impossible to get.
May police maintain gun sale records? Of course not.
And they shouldn't as its a clear violation of our right to privacy.
Are there limitations on "junk" handguns like Saturday night specials?
How do you define what a 'junk' or 'Saturday' night special' handgun is? One that's inexpensive? Why should the price of a weapon have any bearing on how its regulated? The right to bear arms doesn't only apply to the wealthy.

Where to begin?
Look, Woods, do some research before you delve into the Republican run Brady Campaign website. Their mendacity knows no bounds.
Limitations on "assault" weapons? Yes, we have those, see FFA 1934 and the FOPA of 1986 banned further import and manufacture of automatic weapons for civilian consumption. Or maybe you are just confused by the term "assault" weapon. Can you define the Sturmgewehr descended systems? Is it possible that you just don't think Tennesseans should own "Ugly, Black" weapons? How about Pink?

Are gun owners not responsible for injuries that result from leaving a gun accessible to a child? Of course they are, standard tort laws apply. It is no different than having a swimming pool without a fence. And drowning kills MANY more children than guns.

Child safety locks are not sold with guns? Well, you got that one HALF right. They are only sold with pistols. But have you looked at the stats? Only 2.7% of murders were committed with a long gun. So I guess you were really 97.3% wrong.
As for the police maintaining registration records, history has continually proven that registration often leads to confiscation. I doubt you want the Brown Shirts knocking at your door in 20 years.
And what exactly is a Saturday Night Special? Is it an inexpensive handgun? I guess the poor don't deserve the same rights as the wealthy. Or do you just disapprove of substandard build quality? If that is the case then I can get behind you. Put Lorcen out of business: Buy a Glock!
Then again, maybe you are just a closet hopolophobe. How far back do I have to look to read your claims that the streets will run with blood if the Clinton Assault Weapons Ban is overturned?

Sadly(for the Brady Campaign), crime has continued to drop.
Woods, I would get that hopolophobia treated. Don't worry, the state won't report your mental illness.

Note that actual policy making state Democrats go nowhere near gun laws. In Tennessee, even many liberals own firearms and don't think this should be legislated. It's pot-stirrers like Woods who bring the issue up-- that, or wedge issue-obsessed Republicans who have to find new laws to pass to keep the ball rolling.
