The latest: Bredesen says this afternoon he still hasn't heard anything from the White House or any intermediaries or anyone else about the HHS job. He discounts all the talk as mere media speculation.
In Kingsport yesterday, Gov. Phil Bredesen joked about all the buzz that he might join Barack Obama's Cabinet as HHS secretary. "Ron Ramsey has been really kind reaching across party lines every time a job opens up in Washington," Bredesen said. "He's right on the phone. He calls and says nice things about me." The governor added: "No one has contacted me about it. I love my job here. If somebody calls me, I'll talk to them."
Press secretary Lydia Lenker: "We have not been called. We've gotten lots of media calls. We are flattered for being on all these short lists, but the governor loves being governor and is very busy right now. He's gotten no calls and no vetting has taken place."
Update: Unlike Bredesen, Bill Frist won't answer if Obama calls. At the Tennessee Press Association meeting this morning, somebody suggested Frist might make a good HHS secretary and the president might phone while Frist was speaking. To which Frist replied, "I'm in Nashville and I'm in Nashville to stay. So my Blackberry is off."
