Susan Lynn Suffering 'Major Stress' as House Hears Ethics Complaint

Posted by Jeff Woods on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 10:48 AM

As the House Ethics Committee wrangles over whether to hear a complaint against House Speaker Kent Williams, Rep. Susan Lynn--the woman he's accused of sexually harassing--is so stressed out she checked herself into the hospital. That's according to Rep. Brian Kelsey, the Republican bomb-thrower who filed the ethics charge against Williams. Lynn's office workers, however, say that if she's in the hospital, they don't know it. They just told Pith they thought she didn't show up at the Capitol this morning because of the snow. Lynn has been giving media interviews virtually nonstop for the past few days. But you just never know when your nerves are going to act up. Update: House GOP flack Kara Watkins says Lynn did go to the hospital "to have some tests run," but Watkins doesn't know what's wrong with Lynn. The ethics committee met briefly this morning, with Democrats immediately angling to dismiss the complaint. They claim it's improperly before the committee, which has never heard a sexual harassment complaint before. That didn't seem to satisfy Republicans, who want to hear witnesses. "Are there avenues to resolve this?" committee chair Ulysses Jones asked, straining to look concerned. Kelsey popped up in the hearing room to try to speak. "I've got an avenue," he shouted. "You're not recognized," Jones shot back, banging his gavel. "We're in uncharted waters right now," House Democratic leader Gary Odom said before the committee recessed until this afternoon. Kelsey immediately accused Democrats of a cover-up. Here's some of what he told reporters: "This is a complaint about sexual harassment and about lying to cover it up. Clearly this committee came in here with the idea that they are going to cover up this whole issue and not even investigate this. It's really absurd." ... "I don't know where this committee is going right now, but if they came in here not ready to investigate it then that's the wrong attitude to have when you've got serious allegations of sexual harassment and of lying about it to the public." ... "I came here ready to have a hearing. We've got several members who were witnesses to this. To deny them the opportunity to comment on this is a travesty. The reason Representative Lynn is not here is that she had major feelings of stress this morning and she is in the hospital and unable to make it here. This is a serious charge. This is not a joking matter."

Will our TN House ever stop being a sitcom? People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks.

Jeff, when the ethics committee reconvenes this afternoon, please ask 1. why the hearing is not being broadcast on the internet and 2. why Rep. Kelsey wants to go ahead with the hearing today when the principal witness is absent.

OK, Henry. Anything else I can do for you? Could I bring you a sandwich for lunch?

I'm still laughing over the Democrats' statement that the ethics committee has never heard a sexual harassment claim before. No doubt it is true.

Thanks, Ryan. I looked for it earlier and missed it.
Jeff, quit stealing all your blogs from Tom and Andy and get me a tuna on wheat.
By the way,it's ironic that Kelsey chivalrously refers to Susan Lynn's poor health while oblivious to the fact that he is the one who put her in the hospital. It appears that neither Kelsey nor Mumpower talked to her before making a public spectacle out of an incident that she clearly wanted to keep private. What Williams did was stupid and distasteful; what Mumpower and Kelsey are doing is callous and manipulative.

Woods is bringing folks sandwiches now? I like roast beef, myself.
And I'm sorry to be so dense, but I am still not clear about what Williams is being brought before the committee for. Is it that he harassed Lynn or that he lied about it?
The longer this drags on, the worse I feel for Lynn. If this is the three-ring circus that breaks out if a complaint comes to light, after this, what woman is ever going to come forward?

Is it that he harassed Lynn or that he lied about it?
I think it's both, Auntie.

This is truly bizarre, the whole thing. The GOP dropped the ball in 2007, they covered it up, they didn't bring it into the open. Then they decide to bring it up when it's clearly for political purposes. Then Kelsey comes along and acts like it's a proven fact that Williams did and said what Lynn says he did and said. This whole thing is wacky.
And notice how, now that the political damage has been done, the GOP is not following through on an investigation.
Lesson learned: You don't sit on sexual harrassment claims. (See Supreme Court decision...)

Lesson learned: You don't sit on sexual harrassment claims. (See Supreme Court decision...)
and who did sit on the sexual harassment claim/
Wonderful Naifeh not Mumpower. Mumpower did his job ,he wrote a memo and reported the claim to Naifeh.
Naifeh did nothing. More important than the claim is the fact that emeritus speaker of the House did not pursue the claim and shoved it under the rug .
What about Lynn, nervous problem or threats by the Democrats. ?
This state is a disgrace of judicial and political corruption. But one day , Tennessee will be exposed and honest voters are going to have their day in a decent court.
You cannot play with people life and go forever.

Jeez, what a waste of money. I could have easily diagnosed what is wrong with Lynn. It is the epidemic that afflicts Campfield, Maggart, Mumpower, Cassada and the entire Republican caucus. She has no brain.
