More on MBA's Cheering Section--Adorable Pets Edition

Posted by Caleb Hannan on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 1:05 PM

At the very real risk of starting another commenting firestorm, here's a little more on that MBA story...

Last year, during a basketball game against University School, MBA chanters unleashed this beaut: "Jew-S-N! Jew-S-N!" An obvious reference to USN's large number of non-gentiles.

USN boy's athletic director Josh Scouten was happy to point out that, during this year's rematch, both cheering sections behaved appropriately. Which is to say, they yelled and screamed and booed but didn't go over the invisible line of common decency that we all know exists and can best be observed with chants like "Jew-S-N!"

Anyway, at this point we now have two examples of MBA's students pushing limits (as 17-year-olds the world over are wont to do) and Gioia and the rest of MBA's administration pushing back (as adults are supposed to).

Of course, at this point, if you're an MBA, Ensworth or USN student or parent, you've probably stopped reading and are already writing some comment about how the other guy is gay or stupid or gay and stupid. Such is the way of petty feuds.

So I'm just gonna put my hands up and back away slowly now. You do what you wish. And pay no mind to the picture below. It's simply my own attempt at distracti...OMG, adorable pets!

I think you meant to write; "as 17-year-olds the world over are WONT to do" just FYI.
This is nothing new -- MBAers and Harpeth Hall girls and Lipscomb students and BGA ones, etc. etc., have been shouting "Jew-S-N" since the 1970s. And worse. What is nice is that Vince Durnan is actually doing something about it instead of sitting on his hands.

Ten, fifteen, twenty years ago, everybody thought that this is just the way it is; the sky is blue; MBA students shout about Jews at USN basketball games. For me the big change is that a) someone is finally writing about it and b) that the school actually seems to care.
That in itself is real news, BTW. And it is hardly in the past, alas.

It bears repeating:
MBA -- you're over.
It is not necessary for EHS parents OR its students to point out your shortcomings. Your students do a great job of that on their own. Loud and clear. Belligerently.
Guess what? It's a whole new world out there, where arrogant bullies are seen as, well, just arrogant bullies.

Lay off this story. To persist in attempting to haze MBA and its reputation is nothing but tasteless. Surely there are better stories for you and your blog to pursue than high-school athletic events that occurred more than a year ago. Resorting to such tactics is no more than crap-digging. For the benefit of your own reputation, I would highly recommend taking your pooper-scooper elsewhere.

I'm just thankful they're leaving us MNPSers alone for a day or two.
While the racism charge is a bit much, a school that has touted for generations its mission to raise "gentlemen" is subject to criticism when evidence points to the contrary. It's not a major deal, but the MBA folks so outraged need to realize just because you are private doesn't mean you are free from public criticism. Some of your kids are not acting like gentlemen. The headmaster clearly gets it; either help him make them gentlemen or let him simply do his job while you get over yourselves.

First off I am surprised that no one has mentioned how successful mr hannan has been at his job. The website has had alot of hits from which Nashville scene has been getting bundles of money. Congrats.
This is old news. Everyone has been making derogatory cheers towards the opposing team for ages. That is nothing special. It is COMPLETELY irreleavent that tavares is black. Perhaps your assumptions that he was made fun of because of his race are the real problems. The fact that you assumed that that was the cause of said cheers reflects upon you as racist? If you were even to think about the cheer (hooked on phonics) you would note that it accuses illiteracy, which I am sure is not true, with the intended insinuation that he is a recruit. Anyhow, mr hannon has done is job well, despite his lies.

MBA has alot to learn- and for starters, they need to accept that ensworth is on the rise to become the best High School in the State. Far above MBA. But i understand that is a big pill for MBA to swallow

2 HF will forever and always be a public school and its academics will suffer because of it.
3 Ensworth will never be as good as MBA.
4 I know for a fact there a tenth grader and ensworth who reads at a second grade level.
5 For the love of god stop playing the race card.
6 i am pretty sure your typing ability is not the item that gets you into college.
7 Hume Fogg parents are currently employed by MBA parents.
8 Ensworth does contain all angels i can name several people one being edward duncan.
9 How are we hypocrites?
10 Ensworth is on the rise to being the most retarded, arrogant, expensive, and ass hole school in the state.

"2 HF will forever and always be a public school and its academics will suffer because of it."
Public school education does not equal bad education. Period. There are public school kids who could run academic circles around any private school kid you have to offer. They get into colleges that are just as good, they score highly on the SAT's, etc.
Because the public schools overall test scores include the whole range of students, they'll never look as good as private, but there enough fantastic teachers in the public school system that anyone who *wants* a good education can get one. That's not to say there aren't problems, but the attitude of private=better in education is simply not backed up by facts.

Please, please people. We can be better than this. We are all Nashvillians, many of us close neighbors. Many of our kids (private, public, home-schooled kids, will grow up to marry one another and many will work in offices together. Many of us go to churches together. As my 14 year-old daughter pointed out, "I don't get it Mom. Many of these families have more in common than they have differences. Why are they being so ugly to each other?" ALL the kids at ALL schools are Nashville's future. Kids will make mistakes. We all do. it scares me that so many parents are out there waiting to pounce when a child makes a mistake so that they can somehow try to prove that the school the child attends is bad. Yes, we should hold kids and school administrators accountable but let’s help kids learn from their mistakes and not crucify them for making them. For the sake of our community, please stop this ugly bickering. Let's focus on our own school and our own kids and not worry what someone else is doing. All these schools are good schools. Clearly, MBA does not want to be like Ensworth and Ensworth does not want to be like MBA or they would not have added a high school. Nor does USN want to be like the others. There is room for all three and many other good schools in Nashville each serving its own niche, so let's work together to educate our kids. Let's support every child at every school in Nashville in reaching their full potential so that Nashville will be a place our children want to come back to when it is time to raise their own families. Healthy competition is good but the personal attacks and incorrect information written in many of these comments are harmful to us all. Please try not to label and try to see each other as individuals. Without enough citizens who have compassion and respect for others and their differences, Nashville will be left behind in this fast changing world.
