"90 to 95 percent of our contributors will be regular folks who contribute $100 or less."
That was Eric Crafton exactly
one week ago today. At the time, he was only guilty of some slippery semantics; everyone knew the bulk of his funding came from ProEnglish, but they assumed he'd get at least 10 Nashvillians to contribute to his English Only campaign to make the statement true.
Today, they found out that may not be the case...
Thanks to
Christian Grantham and
Nate Rau at Nashville Post, we now have copies of Nashville English Only's campaign disclosure filings. Here's what they tell us:
Out of 10 contributors totaling $89,722.26, exactly $717.76 came from, in Crafton's words, "regular folk contributing $100 or less." That breaks down to four $100 contributors and $317.76 coming from unitemized contributors (if you give less than $100, you don't have to give your name).
Now, there is still the chance that roughly 317 people gave a dollar a piece to Crafton's campaign, making his onerous sidestep credible at the least. But at this point, it's looking more and more likely that Crafton's evasive
regular folk statement was also untrue.
We won't know for sure until the second week of April, when English Only has to offer their campaign's final week tally.
