Beltway Carpetbaggers Paid for English Only

Posted by PJ Tobia on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 9:44 AM

According to the Davidson County Election Commission, almost all of the $84,205 raised in support of the failed English Only charter amendment came from ProEnglish, the Arlington, Va. crackpots who go around the country spending money on these kinds of things.

Only five (!) people in Nashville contributed to the cause, and they gave between $100 and $200 each.

I spoke to Eric Crafton about the funding behind English Only last summer and he was completely evasive about where the money came from.

"From folks," he said, when I asked him who exactly had made donations. "It's just mostly folks and their contributions."

Turns out one of these folks was car dealer Lee Beaman, whom Jeff Woods made famous for his opposition to the Bredesen Bunker. Beaman decried that project as a waste of money. Not like English Only, of course--which was cash well spent, right, Lee?

UPDATE: According to the election commission Beaman gave a total of $6,000 in donations while the other Nashvillians gave donations of $100 to $200 each.

So is the Election Commission releasing the names of the donors? I thought it was state law that anyone's name donating $100 or more would be listed? Is that only for state or federal elections?

I don't know all the particulars of donation disclosure laws, but anytime I’ve gone to look up donations at the Davidson County Election Commission, all amounts and names of donors have been listed, regardless of the size of the donation.

Anything over $100 has to be disclosed.

Lee Beaman also gave $2,000 in support of Prop 8 ... doesn't he own a business in town?

I'm strongly thinking about buying a Toyota as my next vehicle. I'm also strongly thinking now that I'll buy it from someone other than Lee Beaman's business, as a statement that money talks in all languages.

Why yes, Mr. B(igot) owns a couple of little car lots around town, where I'm sure they'd never want to sell anything to a gay person or someone who speaks another language. Only straight-A Americans!
Wonder if they've got signs on the water fountains?

Would the 'English Only' movement have us take down Latin phrasing from public buildings, currency, etc..?

The thing that makes me about fall over is that I just can't imagine that TOYOTA is all that big into English-only. Doesn't Beaman like having foreign cars to sell?
