It'll Take 1,000 Years to Recoup English Only Cost

That's according to the calculations of Nathan Moore. On his blog Moore Thoughts, he estimates the savings on banning non-English communication in Metro government at just $495 a year. And since the election alone may cost as much as $500,000, that means it will take 1,000 years just to pay back the cost of the referendum.

Ouch.

The problem, writes Moore, is that in order to stay clear of civil rights laws, the statute will have to be essentially worthless. Put some teeth in it, and it could entail the loss of millions in federal funding for violating said laws.

Writes Moore: "The assessment is plain for all to see - Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act makes the English Only amendment either a) impotent, or b) extraordinarily costly."

And this isn't coming from your standard granola eater. The slogan of Moore's site is "Conservatism, Freedom, Capitalism."

Today I toured St Luke's, which runs a preschool for desperately poor families. They have a cooperative agreement with Metro for a Metro-paid teacher. Half the parents don't speak English in the home. If English-only passes, the school will have to choose between letting go of its Metro employee or no longer sending home critical documents in Vietnamese and Spanish. Just another of the zillion unintended consequences.

In all fairness, Crafton wasn't the one who made the election costly. It was Karl Dean. Depending on the outcome of tomorrow's election, one of these two men should resign or be subject to a recall election.
Incidentally, Moore is on solid ground about Title XVI. Damned shame the opponents preferred emo to reason.
