Is GOP Harassing Williams' Mother? Hobbs Denies It

Kent Williams is extending the olive branch to Republicans, even if they are phoning his 80-year-old mother to harass her. According to the Kingsport Times News, a caller to his parents' home was identified as a representative of the state Republican Party and told his mother that "they were raising money to boot Kent out in 2010." Says Williams: "My mother is almost 80 years old and not healthy at all. ... Her response was 'I don't think I'll be sending you any money.' To me it looks like an opportunity to take advantage of a situation because a lot of Republicans are mad." GOP flack Bill Hobbs denies any harassment, but confirms the party is trying to turn outrage at Williams into contributions. Williams still is promising to make everything all better by appointing Republicans to chair committees. He even finds it in his heart to try to understand Brian Kelsey: "I don't know what his agenda is. ... It's evidently not to govern. I just don't get it, but I'm not going to give up. Maybe with maturity, there will be some changes. He's such a smart young man." Improving relations in the House hinge on the committee appointments and whether the GOP goes ahead and kicks Williams out of the party, according to this story. Update: George Korda on Williams' claims that he made no deals: "He's coming across a little like a football defensive lineman griping about being flagged for unnecessary roughness as he stands there with the opposing quarterback's severed head in his hands."
