The New York Times weighs in today on English-Only, noting the Nashville would be the only big city in the U.S. to have such restrictions if the referendum wins. For those who've been following the issue, there's not a lot new here. But the best--and most ominous--quote comes from Chamber President Ralph Schulz:

"Economics is global, and to be competitive you cannot drive away immigrants and the businesses that rely on them. Businesses from outside Nashville have been calling and saying, 'Is Nashville a xenophobic place?' "

In the middle of depression, this probably isn't a good thing.

OMG!
I have a summer home in upper NY state. Who the heck is saying that the English Only effort has anything to do with private business? Could someone point me to the section of the proposed law that specifically addresses that, please?
SO is this guy Schulz actually saying that [to be competitive you cannot drive away immigrants and the businesses that rely on them]..Okay, Ralph are you talking about the dumbing effect on immigrants if they are not encouraged to learn and speak English so they can continue working for minimum wage and not have a chance to succeed? So they cannot give their children a glimpse of home for their generation?
Come on dude!
We are passing a referendum that will make doing business with the government agencies NOT PRIVATE SECTOR-a requirement to conduct said business in ENGLISH!
You people in the chamber, the Lowes, and churches, get real. Help immigrants succeed by encouraging them to learn English. By walking into city hall and expecting to be catered to in a language other than English condones complacency. We cannot afford that in a global economy Ralph, Mr. Negri or anyone else opposed to it....
David.
