Saltsman 'Reinforces Negative Stereotype' of GOP, Rival Says

Posted by Jeff Woods on Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 8:05 AM

Here are updates from the Magic Cracker's campaign to chair the Republican National Committee. While no one mentioned Chip Saltsman's fondness for racial jokes at yesterday's RNC candidate debate, one of his rivals, Michael Steele, didn't mind answering a question about it afterward.

"Oh it doesn't help at all," Steele said of Saltsman's Christmas CD song. "Absolutely, it reinforces a negative stereotype of the party."

In Saltsman's defense, Steele went on to say he thinks Saltsman would admit, " 'It was a bone-headed move and I shouldn't have done it.' "

Really? Has anybody heard Saltsman say that yet? From the National Review blog:

Asked by a reporter if he felt the story had blown over, Saltsman said, "I think so." Asked if he felt the story had been hyped during a traditionally slow news period around the holidays, he said, "I agree with that."

Chip-Chip wrong? He'd never admit that. Sad that he couldn't parlay his Huckabee gig into a Junior-type bloviator position on cable TV. Then we'd have constant rich material for gagging and puking and throwing things at the flat screen. As good as a Wii.
