Along with all the predictable stuff Bill Haslam has said on his big announcement day--he's for more jobs, better schools and health care--there's this bit of surprising news: He doesn't own a yacht.
Memphis DA Bill Gibbons, who's also running for governor, told reporters last month that he admired Haslam for holding public office when "he could focus on enjoying mansions and yachts and planes and not worry about anything." According to the AP, that jab produced this retort today from Haslam: "My wife wants to know where this yacht is that he claims we're supposed to own."
Haslam's wife apparently isn't wondering about the mansion or the planes.
More from Haslam on his money: "I don't think it's any great news flash that people that will say, 'Well, you know Haslam's just a rich guy and that's why he's running. My job obviously is to show people that that's not who I am."
We're wondering what Haslam means when he says he won't rely on his personal wealth to fund his campaign. Does that mean he won't spend any of his money or only just so much? We'll ask him tomorrow when he comes to Nashville.
