Georgia Senator Chambliss Cops A Feel On TV: Weird Thanksgiving Ad Airs Anyway

Posted by Brantley Hargrove on Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 5:15 AM

It's a quick clip, so watch for it at the end. Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss wraps up his feel-good Thanksgiving address and grabs his granddaughter, who's sitting on his knee, in exuberant affection. Here's the problem: He grabs her boob. She's a little girl, no denying, but this isn't just some accidental brushing. We're talking straight-up cuppage. This is now blog fodder because, inexplicably, it hit the airwaves, leading me to speculate: Were his aides too scared to ask him for a second take?

"Sir, we need to do it one more time," the aide stammers. "You groped your own granddaughter."

To be sure, an awkward subject to broach.
Perhaps it's an inside job. He's probably gonna win anyway, but maybe an opponent has a mole inside his campaign, waiting for the perfect opportunity to scuttle his campaign. Guess we'll know tomorrow if an errant and accidental boob-grab is enough to derail an election.

It is Republican code.
It says: See, I'm a true Republican..I can talk family values with the best of them... but I really don't believe any of that crap... I need and deserve your (the Republican base) support.."
Guessing that you, not understanding the subtle message underlying his action, must be one of the sane ones still living in Tennessee

Is this Chambliss related to "Dynamite Bob" Chambliss who bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church in B'ham, AL that resulted in the deaths of the 4 black teens in the 60's? Do we really want this legacy to be represented in this day and age???

What the h*** is wrong with you? Do you have kids? If you do, you shouldn't. I hug my 7 year old daughter all over the place. Her chest is not a sexual part of her body and won't be for many years. At this age, it's no different from my 9 year old son's chest, and when I wrap my arms around her and give her a big hug I'm not going to freeze up just because some sick f*** like you is going to see it as "copping a feel."
Please never reproduce. Or at least wait until you get out of junior high school to do so.

WE HAVE MORE TO DO:
Democrat Jim Martin is in a runoff against Bush Republican Saxby Chambliss for the Senate seat from Georgia. Bush's Saxby Chambliss voted against spending a few measly dollars to provide health care coverage for Georgia, and Americas needy children. But he supported wasting hundreds of billions of your dollars, and the life BLOOD of Americas finest on an unnecessary war in Iraq.
At a time when 47 million of you have no health insurance coverage, and over 100 million of you with insurance are just one major illness away from complete financial destruction. Bush and Saxby Chambliss voted to make the heart break of bankruptcy relief even harder for all of you to use.
You see, Bush and Saxby Chambliss, and his family don't have to worry about their health care coverage. They have the finest health care coverage your tax money can buy for them. Courtesy of you. The American Tax payer. In fact, no one but the super rich can afford the health care coverage you the tax payer provide for Saxby Chambliss, and his family for FREE! with your tax dollars.
He supposedly works for you. But he doesn't think you and your family should have access to the type of taxpayer supported FREE health care that you provide for him, and his loved ones for FREE!. Doesn't that just make you BURRING MAD!
Vote for JIM MARTIN for US senator from Georgia. Vote for JIM Martin who will be on your side. Vote for JIM MARTIN who will work with President Obama and a majority congress for you. Vote for JIM MARTIN most of all for your-self, your family's, friends, and loved ones. Vote for JIM MARTIN for a better America, and a better World.
Don't let Saxby Chambliss make a chump out of you by tricking you into voting against your own best interest. Saxby chambliss is NOT! on your side. He's not one of you. He is on George Bush's side. And we all know what a catastrophe the Bush Chambliss administration has been the past 8 years.
Contact all your family and friends and do every thing you can to see to it that JIM MARTIN and GEORGIANS! take that senate seat back for Georgia, and America. No matter where you live in America. This is important to you. President Obama will need all the help, and power you can give him to try and fix this catastrophic mess that the Corrupt Bush Chambliss administration has created.
As I said before you will have to vote in overwhelming numbers to overcome the Bush Chambliss "Let Them Eat Cake" vote fraud machine. Vote early if you can. Then help everyone you can get to the polls and vote for JIM MARTIN. You and your loved ones don't have to be Saxby Chambliss's victims anymore.
I know you will get it done. Just like you did for President Obama.
God bless all of you

BP, so offended by such a silly post. I'm not calling for CPS to intervene here. It was obviously unintentional. It was just weird and awkward to watch, much like every other campaign ad you see on TV. This one was just weird and awkward in a special, disturbing way. Just look at her, BP, she ain't a toddler.

BP, I understand your point, but I have to disagree. That is very odd looking. If she was 3 or 4, no, but that girl looks to be at least 9 or 10. Any teacher or counselor would tell you it's inappropriate at that age to be grabbing a girl like that, family or not. Try telling a pedophile that a 10-year-old girl's chest is not a sexual part of her body.
That said, obviously it was not an intentional grope by the candidate. But still, from a PR point, it's a very odd image. From a point of media critique, it's completely fair game.
Brantley, feel free to go ahead and reproduce. Just spare me the details please.

Quite possibly one of the creepiest things I've seen on a local blog in a while. And I'm not talking about the video.

Wow-Is this really "newsworthy" in any way, form or fashion? To consider that "groping" is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read. I don't know anything about Chambliss, but I do know that if I ever move to Nashville, I'll never rely on the Scene for reliable news. What a terrible representation of a reporter. I work in media and am embarrassed that you could be considered a colleague. Please, go dig up a real story.

Wow - Reading this actually made me thankful for the news I get in Memphis! At least folks here don't have to fabricate stupid crap like this to get noticed. Way to go and, thanks for pumping up the Memphis media. You rock!
BTW, Brantley, I would love to know why you're paying so much attention to the little girl in the video... You don't have to stay in your house on Halloween, do you? You don't have to tell us, it's okay. I think we understand...

I have to admit: As a father of two daughters, I'd have certainly avoided putting my hand on their chest like that once they got beyond 2nd or 3rd grade.
Most amazing part is that whoever produced the ad didn't flag this (a professional will look for even the smallest details that could be a potential problem). This commercial had all the production values of a local furniture store ad.

For those missing the point, the actual action was not that big of a deal. Accidents happen. And some grandparents are not so much perverted as clueless, as is illustrated in the fictional movie Sixteen Candles.
No, the really weird thing is that they chose not to do another take, or if they did do more than one take, they chose to use this one.
Who was the director? Ed Wood?

Every time we think it's safe to read up the Scene again, they hire the intellectual (and hormonal) equivalent of a 12 year old boy.

Emily, since when does a blog post always have to be newsworthy? If it's funny, weird, or otherwise noteworthy, it goes. Are the staid confines of daily journalism wearing you thin?
