"I've said it from the beginning, this is the only job I've really ever wanted," Gruden said, as quoted by the St. Petersburg Times. "As long as the Glazers will have me, I'll be here. I've got a lot of respect for Tennessee. I grew up down there a little bit. My wife is from there. But this is where I want to be, and I can only make myself that clear." Gruden has a contract with Tampa Bay that runs through the 2011 season. But he said that even if he wasn't under contract, college football isn't where his heart is. "I've wanted to be in the NFL my whole life, and this is something I'm really excited to do," Gruden said. "This is where I want to be, and I'll leave it at that."

It was utterly delusional to think that Gruden would take the UT job. The only tangentially plausible reason I heard for his potential interest was his distant connections to UT. He'll be in a better financial position in the NFL. He's at the top level of the coaching profession. He doesn't have to devote any time to trying to persuade 18-year-olds why they come to his school, and he doesn't need a gig. And he's not someone like Nick Saban, who has to leave town every 3 years.
