Post mentions Cooper for OMB

Posted by Jeff Woods on Thu, Nov 6, 2008 at 3:58 PM

Jim Cooper is still getting lots of love in the national media as a possible Obama administration official, no matter how many times our humble congressman denies any interest. From the Washington Post:
One prospect for a top administration job, possibly at the Office of Management and Budget, who would test the Washington establishment is Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.), a crusader for government reform who annually publishes a dire alternative report on the federal budget.
Pith in the Wind is betting that Cooper would take the OMB job if asked, but our opinion is influenced by our desire to cover the crazy special election that would follow for his seat. Already, at least three council members--Megan Barry, Greg Adkins and Jason Holleman--have said they might run.

I like the politics of councilmembers Barry, Adkins, and Holleman (especially Barry). But if Congressman Cooper steps up to the OMB, I'd like to see someone with more DC experience step up for his seat (and keep our councilmembers here, fighting bad ideas like English Only).
And one person immediately springs to mind: Stuart Brunson. He's one of the smartest people I have met at the State Capitol, has solid Tennessee roots, and has plenty of DC experience. Maybe Stuart Brunson for Congress is just my wishful hope that we need to get more younger Democrats involved as candidates in the process in this state (especially after Tuesday), but I think he would make an excellent choice!

Brunson clearly has the experience and an excellent temperament for working with groups that don't always get along.
I guess we'll see. . . .

Tell us some more about Brunson. When you say he's young, how is that in relation to B,A & H? He clearly doesn't have the name recognition of Megan Barry since she out polled even Clement in votes in her run-off. I hope Cooper is selected and chooses to run the OMB. It would be a dream come true, for him and Jane and John Q Citizen..

I agree about Cooper and the OMB. He has a realistic view of budgeting and the federal deficit. His presentation on the state of our national budget and debt is sobering.
I can't say for sure, but I think Brunson is around 40 years old. And I agree, Barry has the highest name recognition of the mentioned candidates. She's the only one of the three to run countywide. Brunson's poltical background is working for Gore's senate office and his 2000 campaign and running Bredesen's 02 and 06 governor races. I know he's also worked in healthcare and PR. He's a lifelong Democrat, a smart guy, and the kind of person we should all be encouraging to run for office. The Democratic party needs some new blood and needs younger candidates that haven't run for office previously.
