Republican leaders can't resist
a little trash talking as they celebrate their big legislative election victories. They just happen to be telling the truth.
Both Ramsey and Mumpower also noted that Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat, did not help his party in state campaigns.
“I think the governor could see the train coming, and he just decided to step out of the way,” Mumpower said. “He did do some radio ads and automated phone calls. He was involved, but he spent more time across the nation campaigning for Barack Obama than he did for any House or Senate candidate in Tennessee.”
Said Ramsey: “I don’t think the governor has a lot of coattails. We saw that in 2004 when he worked hard against (Republican state senators) Diane Black and Jim Tracy. ... Is he a popular governor personally? Yes. But when it comes to pulling somebody else with him across the finish line, he does not have a real good record of doing that.”
