Election Coordinator Denies GOP Charges

Posted by Jeff Woods on Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Like clockwork on the eve of the election, the Tennessee Republican Party is working itself into a state of hysteria over that voter fraud bogeyman. This time, GOP chair Robin Smith accuses state election coordinator Brook Thompson of permitting voters to use out-of-state driver’s licenses as identification at the polls.
“In order to be registered to vote in Tennessee a voter is required to be a resident of Tennessee. But now the state election office is loosening standards and allowing people to use out of state driver’s licenses to vote in Tennessee.” Smith continued, “Something doesn’t add up. With numerous reports warning of fraudulent voter registrations taking place in other states we asked the Division of Elections maintain current voter integrity standards not loosen them. I call on Secretary of State Riley Darnell and Election Coordinator Brook Thompson to immediately end this practice. Loosening standards and undermining the law in Tennessee or its intent put the integrity of the elections in jeopardy by and will just encourage fraudulent voting here in Tennessean.”
Smith says her source is a Republican election commissioner who spoke with Thompson. The only problem is, it’s total bullshit, according to Thompson who tells Pith he doesn’t know what the GOP is talking about. “We get a thousand calls a day. I may have misspoke or somebody might have misunderstood what I said, I don’t’ know,” Thompson says, but there has been no change to voter ID standards. Voters cannot use out-of-state driver’s licenses at the polls, Thompson says.
