Tight Makes Right

"Every national tracking poll has the McCain-Obama race at between 3 and 8 points. This is a considerable tightening in favor of John McCain." So says Hugh Hewitt, one of rightwingdoms celebrity bloviaters. I get that McCain and supporters desperately want to craft an end-game narrative that the race is closing to a dead heat, but when you take a look at trend lines reflecting the national tracking polls all brought together, as Pollster.com does here...

...it's hard not to see "considerable tightening" as "considerably delusional." .

And of course the electoral college picture - which is, after all, what really counts - looks all but impossible for McCain. It seems the press likes to focus on national polls because it's simpler (though far less telling) and because it makes the race appear tighter, which is good for business.
As you can see, Pollster.com has Obama at 311 in the EC, and that excludes toss-up states. Looks like a real nail-biter alright.
