Black and White in Color: Director Margaret Brown at the Belcourt Sunday

Posted by Jim Ridley on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 3:47 PM

And You Thought Your City Was Weird Dept.: For more than three centuries, Mobile, Ala., has celebrated Mardi Gras—and since the very first one, in 1703, its celebrations have been segregated. To this day, the city still plays host to separate black and white carnivals, each with a mightily distinct tone, history and set of traditions. That's the fascinating subject of an acclaimed new documentary called The Order of Myths, which opens Sunday for a brief run at the Belcourt. Director Margaret Brown, who made the superb Townes Van Zandt documentary Be Here to Love Me, will be in Nashville for an opening-night Q&A. The Belcourt's site has information on show times and tickets; for a taste of the film, check out the trailer above.
