Friedman may not be joking. Palin has more skeletons in her closet than you could find in a week in the catacombs. One writer termed her, "The gift that keeps on giving."
Friedmann should definitely get all the blame for keeping a smart, evenhanded person from being confirmed to a federal trial judgeship. He'll have to answer to his Maker for that.
On the other hand, those of us who grew up here would love to see the Cannonball come back.
I'm not sure if it's deliberate, but it seems clever to me to connect the idiotic campaign by an ex-con to keep a well educated person from hearing federal cases with the idiotic decision by Nashvillians to let a nice theme park be replaced by a mall-cum-Gang-a-teria.
Enjoy your sneaker shops and chicken-on-a-stick.
Cabash Hannanball: So the only criteria for a lifetime federal judgeship is to be well educated and smart? Oh - and evenhanded?
How about having more lawyerly experience than only 5 federal cases over his entire legal career -- and only two trials (one of which he lost)? Puryear hadn't seen the inside of a courtroom as a practicing attorney for over a decade.
Sure, he's smart -- but evenhanded? You didn't read much about his many misstatements to the Judiciary Committee, did you? Or his smarmy comments about lawsuits filed by prisoners -- who have an equal right to petition the courts. Or his membership in the Belle Meade Country Club, which blatantly discriminates based on race and gender (ask about their one non-voting-membership out-of-state black member, of over 1,000 club members).
Thankfully, well-educated, smart and evenhanded Tennessee citizens won't have to ensure the likes of Puryear as a federal judge. You should be thanking Friedmann profusely instead of waxing poetic about a roller coaster. Enjoy the ride.
One of the commenters below said Friedman would have to "answer to his Maker" for thwarting Puryear's federal judgeship.
Assuming that God even cares about who gets appointed as a federal judge, apparently it was GOD'S WILL that Puryear didn't get the job. Ever thought of that?
Looks like you bet on the wrong guy -- or at least not on the one who had God's backing, assuming you believe that God has His hand in such things. :)
OK--I'll take on the mob of two.
I will grant that it's true, I don't know if Puryear's evenhanded. His hands look even in the pictures--or at least his shoulders do. Not sure I've ever seen a picture of his hands.
For sure, though, he's more evenhanded than the opposition. I say that with confidence because the opposition--which has made a ton of hay about a trial judgeship--has exploited a bunch of crap that could easily be said of others on the federal bench (even some scions of liberal heritage) in an effort to destroy a reputation.
Clearly Puryear is no joke. His admirers have done a lot more to move humanity forward than the opposition ever will. And it's ludicrous to think that those folks would admire someone unprepared and unworthy of the position. As others have said as this battle has raged, the opposition's experience argument basically boils down to the preposterous view that the only person really qualified to be a federal judge IS A FEDERAL JUDGE.
And that brings us to the Maker. I have to think that the Maker does care who sits on the federal bench. Most of the great moral issues of our time are resolved not in the legislature, but in the courts.
As for Friedmann and his Maker, you can bet that this will be a topic of discussion when the two finally meet. I have no insight on how that discussion will turn out, but those who advance their own careers at the expense of others' good names will no doubt be called to give an account.
Cabash you are so full of shit and I appreciate it! I needed a good laugh this morning and your comments got me there. You assume there's an omnipotent creator, then you assume this entity gives a flying fuck about some squabbles of monkeys on a speck of dust, THEN you assume that said imaginary friend actually WILLS the outcome of a popularity contest!
I heard god was too busy playing Texas Hold'em with Santa, Satan, and the Easter Bunny to weigh in on this one anyway. Go back to church and take your half-witted commentary with you.
Cabash: You simply can't argue with this, if you truly believe that God cares about such things. It was apparently God's will that Puryear isn't on the bench. Otherwise, you'd be saying that Friedmann is more powerful than God! If God wanted Puryear to get the nomination, he would have - simple as that.
Which means you were backing the wrong man, and you may have some explaining to do when you meet YOUR Maker. Have you thought about that?
Who said anything about the Maker's will? All I said was that the Maker would be talking to Alex Friedmann about his decisions. I don't think I ever said that Puryear was the Maker's man. I know I never thought it. It's just flat out ludicrous, however, to say that if there is an omnipotent (your word) God that S/He doesn't care about the justice system. That's the kinda stuff an omnipotent Maker would be into, I am sure.
When I meet my Maker, the first thing I will ask Her(im) to do is reveal your identities. Then I will be coming back to haunt you both. Get your talismans ready.
Right now, the Maker is going to help me type 'airplane' in the box below (required). Watch me now...
lol -- If God "cares" about the justice system, then he can do whatever he likes in that regard, right? Or is your Maker powerless, only watching helplessly from the sidelines? If you think He has that power (which he didn't exercise in Gus's case) but don't admit that here, because you don't like being proven wrong, then you're putting your own ego and pride before God -- and you and He are definitely going to have a little talk ... and it won't be about anyone other than YOU and how you have belittled His power. :)
BTW, what about YOUR identity? "Sore loser," perhaps?
