Cohen Compares Sweet Sarah to the 'Killer of Christ'

Posted by Jeff Woods on Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 2:23 PM

You just knew this was coming. The Tennessee GOP is demanding that Congressman Cohen apologize. Says GOP chair Robin Smith:
“Frankly, we’re shocked that Rep. Cohen, a Memphis Democrat who was targeted by vicious anti-Jewish slurs and bigotry during his two successful runs for Congress, would make such idiotic and offensive comments. Comparing Gov. Palin to the killer of Christ is simply beyond the pale. Gov. Palin’s strong Christian life and faith are self-evident.”
Update: Kleinheider ruminates on the controversy: "Did Steve Cohen really compare Sarah Palin to the 'killer' of Christ? Is that an accurate way to describe Pilate’s role in the death of Christ? Were there any others responsible? Could it be said that it was humanity at large who was responsible for Christ’s death?"

Ummm...Robin, dear, Pontius Pilate was the governor who rather famously washed his hands of Jesus' blood. Pilate gave Him over to a mob who had been whipped up by the local religious zealots and political leaders. Pilate is guilty of failing to protect the innocent against mob tyranny. The guilt of the crucifixion extends to all of us who at times succumb to being part of such a mob mentality, and more particularly to those who incite and manipulate the ignorant and the fearful.
Steve's Biblical reference is just fine, thanks.

It was simply a way to cut through the aura that the right puts around Sarah Palin and take the image down a couple of notches. They were glorying in her governorship and hating on community organizers, and they deserved the comeuppance.
The analogy pretty much evens the score even though Republicans are going to put on a whining, hand-wringing show about it.
How dare liberals take our Jesus from us!

That's funny! Religion incites and manipulates the ignorant. It's a self-fulfilling prophesy!

Jesus himself said many will come in my name and even claim to be the Messiah...guess Mr Cohen shows us where Obama stands in prophesy!
Um and by the way...Jesus was the Son of God...not just some community organizer!!!

Cohen has been given a free pass in the Memphis media. His hate speech against Armenians (among the first Christians, and the first country to adopt Christianity as its official religion) was as bigoted and hate-filled as anything emanating from the mouth of a U.S. congressman since the early 1960's. Do the Commercial Appeal and Memphis Flyer care? Not if it involves criticizing this bizarre fellow's shenanigans.

Cohen is a disgrace to all of us in Tennessee. Tennessee is famous for it's leaders from Davy Crockett and Andrew Jackson to many more.
Cohen is far from the volunteer state's standards for elected leaders we send to Washington to represent us, and; he should be removed from office.
His voting record is much like Obamas. Only in Memphis could he get elected. The people of Memphis cannot be proud of him comments.
I have friends from many religions, served with some from his religion in combat, and; not a one ever made any comment close to Cohen's.
