Our Readers Don't Seem Pleased with Sarah Palin

Ever since the Republican convention, Scene's in-box has been overflowing with letters on Sarah Palin. In part it's a testament to the Obama campaign in getting grassroots supporters to bomb their hometown newspaper. But it also speaks to some alarming beliefs that lie not too far under the prospective VP's charming surface. Read on... What? She's into banning books? As mayor, Palin tried to ban books from the library. Palin asked the library how she might go about banning books because some had inappropriate language in them—shocking the librarian, Mary Ellen Baker. According to Time, "news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor." What year/century is this? D M Robinson Nashville When's she gonna start thinking about the war? I would like to address what we have heard about Sarah Palin the new Republican vice presidential candidate. Palin recently said that the war in Iraq is "God's task." She's even admitted she hasn't thought about the war much, but just a year ago she was quoted saying, "I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq." How can Palin let the words "country first" come out of her mouth when she has a son who is on his way to Iraq but hasn't really focused on the war? I am sure I can speak for many other moms that, yes, we have our daily jobs to do, but we are also focused on what's going on with our sons and daughters who fight for our freedom and safety daily. At some point during the day, the night, or week we pause to focus on a prayer for all of our soldiers that are fighting for our country every day. Sarah Palin not focusing much on the war is not good enough for vice president, and that is certainly not "country first!" Furthermore, Palin decided she wanted to ban certain books from the library and when the librarian did not go along with her plan, Palin threatned to fire her. Palin is not the kind of person we want running our country, in fear that every time something does not go her way she will take offense with violent behavior. The American people do not want this kind of behavior nowhere near that red button in the White House! As a native Nashvillian, we need our city to know the truths about John McCain and Sarah Palin. It is important to our country to know exactly the kind of politics they are promoting. We definitely do not need Sarah Palin's corruption in the White House. Clara Volkes Nashville Palin's place is back at home It is said that a woman's place is in the house -- House of Representatives, the Senate, and the White House. But when one is the mother of five children, one having gone astray and one with special needs, her place is in the home. Some can have a dual life, but the high pressure of the VP demands all one's time. Sarah sees life from the position of a 'beauty contest.' And even her family sees the surface level of her politics. Mayor of Wasilli and governor of a state smaller than my hometown is a shallow label for experience. How the Republicans can consistently manipulate the minds of ordinary Americans by appealing to their lesser nature is cause for concern. John McCain is a hard core conservative and Sarah is a hard core conservative--and a less effective mother. I tremble to think of her in such high office. Shallow, spiteful of tongue, and a show girl is what Sarah is. Don't let them fool us again. And John, mplease go home and retire! Tommie Young Nashville Palin needs a lesson in remedial science Anyone who isn't aware we live on an electromagnetic ball on which we have been digging holes in and burning for decades isn't very oriented to "reality" in my book. If not by now, it should be obvious to all that our atmosphere, which requires a certain amount of magnetics "generated by the Earth" to maintain itself, is beginning to weaken. Tell me, Sarah, what is the likely response of these magnetics if we continue to dig materials from the "earth's engine" from deep under the surface and burn it? Answer: Weakened magnetics, resulting in increased sun penetration on the surface which OBVIOUSLY will cause the earth to heat up. Hey, Sarah, do you know "historically" how many gallons of oil have been pumped from the ground and burned in one way or another? How about coal? If our new vice president doesn't understand that man has done this and the earth is suffering because of the fear and greed of a few, god help us all. J.R. West II McMinnville Palin needs a fact-checker These past several days I listened to the speakers at the RNC. I found what I saw and heard extremely un-American, especially Sarah Palin. I have read many glowing articles about Ms. Palin in the TN newspapers and I think it is a great disservice to not inform your voters of the truth. Below is a list of just some of her lies: 1. Palin recently said the war in Iraq is God's task (aren't we fighting the crazy idealists and suicide bombers that die in the name of God?) 2.Palin wants to teach creationism in schools. 3. Palin stated about global warming, "I'm not one who would attribute it to being man-made." 4. Palin is extremely anti-choice -- even in the event of rape or incest (but if you vote for her because of that, remember McCain is pro-choice) 5. She opposes comprehensive sex-ed. As mayor, she voted against funding teen-preganacy programs. 6. As mayor, she tried to ban books from the library. 7. As governor she cut funding for special needs programs by more that 60% for FYs 2007, 2008, 2009. 8. She did support the bridge to nowhere. She said repeatedly that Alsaska should take advantage of earmarks. She specifically hired a lawyer as mayor to go to Washington to secure earmarks. Since she has been Gov. Alaska has requested and received more earmark money per person than any other state. 9. She said Sen. Obama has not done anything since he has been in office. In fact, he passed into law (with bipartisan support) the Lugar-Obama bill on nuclear non-proliferation (you know, to keep the terrorists from getting access to nuclear weapons) and a major ethics reform bill. 10. She said Obama voted present 130 times. True, but that was out of thousands of votes and over a dozen years. On the other hand, McCain did not even bother to show up for over half the votes in the Senate during the same period of time. 11. According to Obama's plan, he plans to develop a lot more energy than McCain. 12. Obama is only raising taxes on someone making more than $250,000 yr. Everyone else will get a tax break. In contrast, McCain will extend tax cuts to the wealthy. McCain has no plan to cut taxes for the poor and middle class. There is so much more...please urge your readers to check out the facts for themselves at a not-for-profit and non-partisan factcheck.org. I am not saying that the Democrats have not on occasion made their own exaggerations--we should hold them accountable too. But for our first introduction to Sarah Palin to have said so many lies in under 45 minutes is very frightening. Maybe this is ok in Alaska, but not here. Kelly Conrad Goodlettsville You're scaring me: A letter to Sarah Dear Sarah: I am writing this letter to ask you to please, please consider dropping out before demeaning the highest office in our land. After watching your speech, I was shocked to wake up this morning the raving reviews from NPR, AP, and virtually all media outlets. I expected sharp analysis of the substance of your speech. However, all I heard was meaningless praise and encouragement of your performance. It was as if it was a play and how you spoke mattered more that what you said. Don't take this the wrong way -- do not believe the hype. You are not ready for the big time. In times when Russia is talking about the dawn of the "post-America world," this is not a game and we need real experienced leadership more than ever. The resume you gave -- "average hockey mom", "small town mayor," governor of Alaska, and "pitbull with lipstick" does not give me a warm, fuzzy feeling. It is sounds great if you are applying for mayor of Smyrna, but not so great if your are deciding who to put in charge of the war in Iraq. In reality it is a laughable resume for a vice president. With an open mind I was looking forward to you explaining what the job of a small town mayor involves. However, you never did explain except to say a small-town mayor is sort of like a "community organizer," except that you have actual responsibilities." And then you went on to berate Obama and praise McCain. Well, I know I'm just a community little league coach and I have responsibilities, so I know our community organizers have them too. I am not sure why you would demean community organizers so. No offense but we need nothing but the best and brightest on our ticket for America. We need nothing less than the smartest, highest educated, most diplomatic, sharpest, experienced people to deal with the sensitive issues we face here and abroad in Iraq, Iran, Russia, Darfur, Pakistan, Israel, and Afghanistan. Our troops abroad and citizens at home deserve nothing less. We should all agree that you, me, hockey moms, small town politicians, and regular average people do not fit the bill. Besides your lack of credentials Sarah, you are out of touch with Americans and the world on issues. You demonstrated disregard for our energy and environmental concerns when you put oil and gas before clean, renewable energy. You do not believe humans contribute to global warming, even though credible science all over the world says it is true. You showed lack of character when you lied saying Obama is "doing nothing at all" about energy and "is against producing it." First, who would be against producing energy? That is just ridiculous. Second, Obama and the Democrats have a strong energy plan with a sustainable future centered around renewable fuels. Your plan is focused on polluting, finite, fossil fuels. America needs to lead the world in new technology and alternative energy, not follow down the same old dirty path of big oil. Focusing on renewable, alternative fuels will lessen our dependence on oil, thus lessening our dependence on foreign oil, and also bode well for healing our global relationships. It shows we respect others' concerns about energy and the environment. It shows a commitment to America and the world rather than big oil companies. Your excitement as you promised more pipelines amidst the chanting of "Drill Baby Drill" does just the opposite. It keeps America dependent on oil and thus foreign oil and weakens us in the event of a crisis. It disillusions other countries who look to us to be progressive leaders in the energy crisis. And last but not least, it shows allegiance to the oil companies rather that Americans who are suffering with the highest gas prices ever while oil companies have the highest profits ever. Another issue you are out of touch on Sarah is sex-ed. How can you oppose sex-ed and contraceptives in public schools, yet be such a staunch advocate for making abortions illegal, even for rape and incest victims? Isn't preventing pregnancy the best way to prevent abortion? Listen Sarah. I'm sure you are a great hockey mom and PTA member. But you just do not have the vision, education, or credentials to be vice president of America today. Don't feel bad. Most people don't. For the love of country, John McCain should have never picked you and that reflects on him. You should never have accepted and that reflects on you. Please, please drop out. Peter Speltz Pegram

Re the book bannings--I will never understand conservatives who defend that. Aren't they always saying that the government shouldn't play babysitter and usurp the parents? Wouldn't a library determining what your kids can and cannot read be the ultimate example of the government interfering with a family decision?

To all those who are spreading the rumor that Palin asked a librarian to ban books, please read this from today's LA Times:
News that Sarah Palin made inquiries about banning books shortly after becoming mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, has quickly been followed by speculations of what books she might have targeted.
Lists of books have been circulated in blog comments and via e-mail. They haven't been reported in papers like The LA Times because there is no evidence that they are accurate.
In fact, one widely circulated, very long list (which appears, among other places, on Librarian.net's comment string and has been disavowed by the website's owner) is obviously false because it includes four books that had not yet hit shelves when Palin became mayor in 1996 — "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" and "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," all by J.K. Rowling.
The Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman, the local Wasilla newspaper, has reposted a 1996 article covering the censorship inquiries that Palin put to local librarian Mary Ellin Emmons. This piece clearly states that "Palin said Monday she had no particular books or other material in mind when she posed the questions to Emmons." That should put an end to the inaccurate lists that are circulating.

Frank:
You make it sound like Palin never broached the subject of banning books, which is not true. The part that IS true is that -- in the public meeting, at least -- she never mentioned any specific titles.
It is certainly curious that Palin would being up the subject of removing books from the library merely as a theoretical question if she or some of her supporters didn't have just such a thing in mind. Why would you float such a thing as a trial balloon, especially in a public meeting rather than in a private conversation with the librarian? According to recent interviews with some of those who attended the meeting, they certainly came away with the impression that Palin's intent was to get rid of some books, even if there was no specific list. And it's very hard to figure how Palin could attempt to fire a librarian for lack of support except for the librarian's response at the meeting that she would fight any attempt to ban books. It is also a measure of public backlash that the town rallied around the librarian and not Palin, preventing any firing.
We would know if there was a discussion of specific books only if the librarian comes forward, but she left town a couple of years after this incident and is not talking to the media about it today.
The list of titles that Palin allegedly tried to ban may be a creation of the blogosphere, but the outlines of the story have been well reported in the print media.
I had a pretty favorable impression of Palin initially. The more I learn about her, the less I like her.

Spreading the rumor? My friends, it is no rumor. The librarian and others claim it is true (as apparently does the very first sentence you post from the L.A. Time story), and as far as I know, no one is disputing it. My friends, do these inaccurate lists mean the whole story is merely a rumor? No, my friends, it does not. Nice try, Frank.

Hey Nashville people, get out there and check the "facts" yourself, and not be told what to think by This rag or the NY Times or even Fox News.
Check this story from the source if you REALLY care.
Palin asked everyone in town for letters of resignation, and a resume she would pick one or the other, tough, hard core, agreed.
The Librarian was working on revising the "book challenge polices" WHAT!! Censorship! Wake up please, do you think they will put any book in a library? Do you have Hustler there in Nash?
While that was process occurring Palin asked her how she would react to censorship, that was one of "many issues discussed" Does that she wants to censor?
I don't see how you just jump to that conclusion
The best idea is just to read the original story where the spin is at a minimum at least
She has more than enough support as it is, (check the polls). But at least you will feel better about it when she wins, if you realize that she is not as good nor as bad as is being made out. The truth, as usual is in the middle.

"Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God," she said. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's plan." Sarah Palin.. Now many people wrongfully have read into this what she has not said.. We all need to ensure everything we do is in accordance with God's plans, even daily.
Or is Sarah Palin's Bible church in Alaska teaching falsehoods now?
http://obamacan.wordpress.com/2008/09/08/sarah-palins-war-in-iraq-paving-the-way-for-the-coming-of-christ/
Sarah Palin was baptized a Roman Catholic, and then became an evangelical Protestant, Pentecostal at a young age. The church she now only recently attends, Wasilla Bible Church is part of a wide ranging non Pentecostal, fundamental evangelical movement known in theological circles as dispensationalist. Extreme right winger Christianity. So it is more than fair to ask Sarah Palin, George Bush. and Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper row too, as what underlies their view that the Iraq War is supposedly a task God has given us - it is imperative. If any of them says it is consistent with the dispensationalist view, that fact alone should be carefully examined, because it gives rise to a false worldview that is likely to keep us at war in the Middle East perpetually, with no end to come. Does they all want to take us back to the Crusades?
Many fundamentals falsely do believe that by helping the Jews reclaim their promised Land they would hasten the second return of Jesus Christ.. a futile and false approach at it's best nest now too.. A false justifications of the too often ungodly religious wars in the middle east now too.
(Mat 5:9 KJV) Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
(Psa 133:1 KJV) A Song of degrees of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; 3 As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
(Psa 134:1 KJV) A Song of degrees. Behold, bless ye the LORD, all ye servants of the LORD, which by night stand in the house of the LORD.2 Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the LORD. 3 The LORD that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion.
Yes many Jews today are struggling for all of the Land of Israel that no longer has been Biblically Promised to them..
Very clearly and simply too there is not one verse in the New Testament that states now even after the Roman destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, and their scattering of the Nation of Israel worldwide, of a promise of the Jews restoration of the land of Israel, or even the city of Jerusalem being freed, and Jersualem itself will only will be free after the Second Coming, the return of Jesus Christ for his bride, the Church, the true Christians.
Now had most fundamentals evangelicals actually read their Bibles, known the Bible instead of wrongfully listening to the so called Bible teachers, false preachers, bad teachers they would have easily known that it was so.
The sole one verse that is falsely often referred too Luke 21:24 as a supposed proof of the restoration of the Jews, Israel clearly still has nothing to do with the restoration of Israel. Do now Read the Bible for yourself now in the actual context, even in the context of the the future New Heaven and New Earth, New Jersualem solely forthcoming to all of the true Christian believers now as well
Luke 21:20 But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know {and} understand that its desolation has come near.
Luke 21:21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside [the city] get out of it, and let not those who are out in the country come into it;
Luke 21:22 For those are days of vengeance [of rendering full justice or satisfaction], that all things that are written may be fulfilled.
Luke 21:23 Alas for those who are pregnant and for those who have babies which they are nursing in those days! For great misery {and} anguish {and} distress shall be upon the land and indignation {and} punishment {and} retribution upon this people.
Luke 21:24 They will fall by the mouth {and} the edge of the sword and will be led away as captives to {and} among all nations; and Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled (completed).
Luke 21:25 And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; and upon the earth [there will be] distress (trouble and anguish) of nations in bewilderment {and} perplexity [without resources, left wanting, embarrassed, in doubt, not knowing which way to turn] at the roaring (the echo) of the tossing of the sea,
Luke 21:26 Men swooning away {or} expiring with fear {and} dread {and} apprehension and expectation of the things that are coming on the world; for the [very] powers of the heavens will be shaken {and} caused to totter.
Luke 21:27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with great (transcendent and overwhelming) power and [all His kingly] glory (majesty and splendor).
Luke 21:28 Now when these things begin to occur, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption (deliverance) is drawing near.
Luke 21:29 And He told them a parable: Look at the fig tree and all the trees;
Luke 21:30 When they put forth their buds {and} come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and perceive {and} know that summer is already near.
Luke 21:31 Even so, when you see these things taking place, understand {and} know that the kingdom of God is at hand.
Luke 21:32 Truly I tell you, this generation (those living at that definite period of time) will not perish {and} pass away until all has taken place.
Luke 21:33 The sky and the earth (the universe, the world) will pass away, but My words will not pass away.
(Rev 21:1 KJV) And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 3 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
So if any Jewish or gentile person wants to be in the new Jerusalem they have to accept Jesus Christ as their lord and personal savior rather still too. For there is no other name given unto men by which they can escape from eternal separation from God, Hell.
This is not the only place of much too many that Dispensationalists are wrong in now too..
Time also more Christians read their Bible instead of the fictional books, bad commentaries now too.

I read your article, Brad, and I'm just as bothered by Palin's approach to this as I was before -- hell, maybe more so. None of her stated justifications in the story make any logical sense, given the information the story presents.
And why, in a laid-back town of 7,000 where no office-holders have run as Democrats or Republicans previously, does the new mayor feel a need to ask for everyone's resignation as a test of loyalty? Given some of the other stories that have come out, it's not hard to see a pattern here.
Just a hunch: The librarian "proved" herself unsuitable to Palin because she mentioned the evil call letters A-C-L-U. Among a lot of Christian social conservatives I know, the ACLU is viewed as part of a plot to destroy Christianity in America.

The more I hear about Palin's stance on various issues, the more I like her. The more rocks the tree huggers, tofu eaters and excuse makers throw at her, the more solid my views become. After working in TN state government for 2 1/2 years I have been witness to the whitless. I think that Winston Churchill said it best that "government is all about perpetuating itself" (paraphrased). The blatant waste I've seen is staggering. That McCain chose a running mate that was consistent with re-tooling government is a good thing.
I lived on DC's doorstep for 4 years and my family survived anthrax scares that closed down our kid's schools, regularly filled my truck at a gas station where the DC snipers killed a man, bought duct tape, plastic for my windows and stored water and food in the basement when there was a threat of a "dirty bomb," and last but not least, smelled the burning jet fuel when the Pentagon was struck on 9/11. I'm glad to know that my decision to leave Nashville (my beloved hometown for over three decades) and move to Texas fourteen years ago was a sound one. No wonder you've ended up with a Friend of Bill for both mayor and governor- the socialist wing of the Democratic Party is apparently alive (if not so well) right there in Nashvegas. In fact, you'd never know this was the same town that produced fine gentlemen like Fred Thompson and Bill Frist.
But it appears you liberals are finally facing up to the fact that you have a candidate who thought he'd already won, only to realize that there's still two months left until election day! Oops! Trying to run on the infamous "Symbolism over Substance" message that worked in the 90's for our first black president could only get poor Barry so far. First he limped out of the primaries after one girl (Billary) whipped his narrow a--, now he's faced with the prospect of another filly, this one both heterosexual and attractive, putting on ice his "hopes" of reigning supreme over the American people for the next eight years. Hey, Hussein- why don't you do something you've never done, alright, and get an actual job like the rest of us. You know, one that doesn't sponge off of a highly manipulated electorate!
The best news is that the majority of you mindless sheep that drink the MSNBC Kool-Aid every day and spout off all this "please take all our money because we can't do anything without the government's help" garbage are too busy blogging each other to death, to the point where you probably never registered to vote in the first place. Go to church, get married, have a couple of kids, and learn what it's like to have real bills and responsibilities- and to be taxed in the highest tax bracket- you know, get an actual life where you're pursuing the American dream instead of waiting for someone to hand it to you- and then get back to me.

Respects the sanctity of life? She is a hunter. She kills for sport, but there is a much bigger problem here. She needs to come out and speak to the issues instead of taking mean spirited, sarcastic, pre-scripted shots at other candidates. Her stand on abortion should not be the only reason she gets elected. She has not been fully vetted by the American people. The rest of the candidates have all had to go through extreme public scrutiny. Frank, your leaving stuff out. The lie circulating the internet was the list of books banned. No books were banned, but Ms. Palin wanted to know how the librarian felt about censorship. When the librarian refused to consider it, Palin fired her, however an uproar from the town led Ms. Palin to rehire the Librarian.

You've got to admire the BO army, marching lockstep and assigning troops to infiltrate every posting opportunity to spread their slime.
Fortunately, the more slime they sling the more slippery their positions. Soon they will sink in it never to surface.

The cost of fish oil products has risen significantly. I am giving my son 2 capsules a day to help him with math. Does anybody know where I an find an affordable solution? By the way, it is great. His grade went up 2 points after consuming fish oil capsules.
