Mourners Outraged by Politicking at Funeral

Posted by Jeff Woods on Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 1:11 PM

Predictably, only a week before the election, things are getting a little testy in the school board race between the incumbent Ed Kindall and the Chamber of Commerce-endorsed candidate, Cordenus Eddings. Kindall supporters say Eddings outraged a grieving family by politicking at a funeral this week. Carnelle Barnes, a friend of Kindall’s, says he was leaving the funeral of his ex-wife’s mother when Eddings appeared on the front steps of Lawrence Avenue Church of Christ and started handing out campaign fliers. “I told her, ‘This is a funeral.’ My daughter screamed at her, ‘This is my grandmother’s funeral!’ I said, ‘Someone give me a camera phone so I can take her picture,’ and she took off running. It was appalling. People were crying. How far will a candidate go to get a vote?” We have asked Eddings to comment on this complaint, but we haven’t heard back yet. She’s been pretty busy. Flush with money from the chamber, her campaign’s sending mail to voters with the headline: “The Ed Kindall Record. Failing Test Scores. Rising Dropout Rates. Fiscal Irresponsibility.” It could have added: “And Pissed Off the Chamber By Voting Against Resegregation.” It’s a great way to pick a school board, isn’t it?

There's real frustration within many urban school systems right now. I wonder if it's the unreasonable demands of NCLB in the face of real challenges. Look at Miami right now: 
Chaos erupts at Miami-Dade board meeting
About an hour before a budget hearing Wednesday evening, Miami-Dade school board member Renier Diaz de la Portilla stepped to the board's dais and begin reading a memo calling for superintendent Rudy Crew to be fired. Crew supporter and meeting chairman Solomon Stinson interrupted Diaz de la Portilla, abruptly adjourned the meeting and then stormed out of the room. Although another board member brought the meeting back under control after about five minutes, Board Vice Chairwoman Perla Tabares Hantman called the event "embarrassing." The Miami Herald (7/31)

Geez, this story is a great illustration of why the Scene has lost so much credibility with me, and I know I'm far from the only one.
Eddings is handing out campaign flyers at a funeral? OK, that's a legitimate story to report (and, if true, would make you think Eddings is a little loopy).
But then you couldn't resist (once again) labeling the rezoning plan as "resegregation." This is a school district where at least 3 of the high schools are ALREADY more than 80% African American. A few of the elementary schools are even more segregated as it is. The plan significantly changes the racial balance in only one high school (Hillwood); it increases the percentage of black students in another school in a white neighborhood (Hillsboro); and it slightly increases the percentage of African American students in another HS (Pearl-Cohn) that already is 88% black. And in this last case, many of the rezoned students will still have the opportunity to remain at Hillwood if they choose and receive free bus transportation as they do now.
It is appropriate to ask (as a few other posters have) why this city can't take a radically different approach to student assignment. Someone cited efforts like those in Louisville, where they are factoring economic balance as well as racial makeup into the equation. It is appropriate to question whether the rezoning plan will save as much money as is claimed. But it is hard to see how anyone could honestly look at this plan and label it as "resegregation." This would either require a willful ignorance of the current makeup of the schools and the plan itself, or it reflects an agenda.
And just because Eddings may be crazy doesn't mean her literature is wrong about Ed Kindall's record. That's something else your "reporting" doesn't even touch. Much more than any other member of the school board, Kindall has been part of a system that has become increasingly marked by failure and driven off a great number of families with enough resources to give them "school choice." You would think that a board member such as Kindall who is unhappy about the prospect of "resegregation" would have expressed more concern over the years about near total segregation that already existed at Pearl-Cohn and other schools in his district.

EK has been talking about it forever; he was just told to be patient and wait - the plan would work. The plan hasn't worked, which EK and some former school board members pointed out, and constantly changing zoning lines without giving parents/students REAL choices is the same old same old. It's like people in this city have one foot nailed to the ground.

"EK has been talking about it forever..."
ED has been talking about "diversity" and nothing else forever. "Diversity" is his solitary agenda, to the exclusion of actual "Educating Students," or anything else. And his agenda has failed everyone. His agenda his run off the students he needs for anything that looks like diversification to be possible. His time is so yesterday. He needs to go.

I hope the next funeral Eddings hands out flyers at is the one for Ed Kindall's political career.

I'm intrigued by the fact that Cordenus Eddings ran for, and lost, an election for Council last fall. So now she's running for school board? Does that make her one of those folks so desperate to win office that they'll just keep running and running and running . . . ? (See Vic Lineweaver.)

Folks this is just simply another tactic to try to get to someone who Ed can't seem to stop. I witnessed this and she was across the street from the church and did not know that a funeral was taking place and Carnelle Barnes (if this is really his name) is working on Kindall’s campaign as the Kindall black jeep which had a Ed Kindall campaign sign taped to it was parked at the church. Take what others say with a grain of salt especially at campaign time. Ed Kindall’s man was campaigning at the funeral and has been illegally putting yard signs in the median’s all over the district.
Face it EK your time is up. It's great someone is campaigning that hard. Its more than what we can say about EK who has been in the seat 23 years and no one hardly ever saw him. Anyone there 23 years should not have to work very much at all. If he was working and well known by so many why is he running around frantically trying to be seen? Has anyone asked this? Why is he constantly attacking and trying to find something wrong with his opponent? Is he entitled to the seat forever? If he were confident in his abilities a candidate would not even phase him. Come on folks. Stop taking up for someone who is divisive and really has not worked for very many folks. I say to Ms. Eddings give it your all. At least somebodys really working.

Be careful what you wish for. She certainly has sent out very negative mail, not very well targeted to her district.

Yes, the direct mail campaign Anonymous mentioned is pathetic. It demonstrates clearly why Eddings is not the right choice for District 7, and should not be allowed to contribute to the board. The direct mail is insulting to any District 7 voters. Most folks in my large circle of active voters say the campaign has backfired, having lost what little respect she had as a lightweight who's pretty empty upstairs. Now she's gone on the attack with negative ads, showing even more of her "substance" if you could call it that. She is misleading the voters with this direct mail. Thick as thieves, as the saying goes -- her campaign finance director was convicted of a felony (armed robbery). And to think, she wants to lead our kids...

hey Junior, you're so right. How ignorant does Eddings thinks voters are... I saw her on the televised debates and she failed to answer any question intelligently. On one answer, she sounded like the beauty pageant contestant who was on YouTube a few months back. Does she really think Kindall isn't interested in raising test scores? or making our schools safe? or cutting waste? or hiring qualified administrators and teachers? I decided not to vote for this fool long before the news about her finance guy. She's a pawn of the Chamber's, but my vote is going to Ed Kindall.

School board candidate Cordenus Eddings failed to file her campaign finance reports on time, according to the Davidson County Election Commission. Once Eddings is notified she is not in compliance, she will be fined $25 until she files her paperwork.Eddings, 41, is running against incumbent Ed Kindall for the District 7 seat. The deadline was last week.

What about the cell phone abuse and the lawsuits against Kindall. The story about the treasurer that happened 25 years ago and now he is a successful model citizen didn't go anywhere. That's what people want to see. I say go EDDINGS! Anything is better than do nothing Kindall.
Anna Page, Janis Sontany, her councilperson Sandra Moore and many others came out in support of Eddings on a post card yesterday. She deserves a chance as a voter in District 7 I am glad to see someone visible and just like what has been said in many of my circles, Janis, Anna, and others are right, Kindall never did anything for the Glencliff area. In fact no one knew who he was. Isn't this a crazy thing. Someone there representing us and we don't even see him or know him. My vote goes to Eddings. Kindall has to go.

Glencliff until four years ago was in the Antioch cluster. And I think you have G. Thompson III and E. Kindall confused in your accusations about cell phones and lawsuits since they are the two black men on the school board. They must look alike to you.
