Mike Stewart is Watching Your Every Move

Posted by Matt Pulle on Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 10:21 AM

Do you have a Mike Stewart sign in your yard? Have you signed up for his emails? Well, you better get your ass to the polls, pronto. Stewart’s campaign manager, the perpetually harried Elizabeth MK Sullivan, has her eyes on you. In an email yesterday to the state House candidate's backers, Sullivan lists the names of people who have voted early for the August 7th Democratic Primary. I have never seen a campaign do that before. While Sullivan thanks those she listed for showing up at the polls, her message is clear: Turnout is low and we know that some of you have said you’re going to vote for us, but haven’t yet. Don’t think we’re not watching you. Anyhow, if you’re a Stewart supporter and Sullivan’s tactics annoy you, here's an easy solution. Heed Sullivan’s directive. Go directly to the polls. And pull the lever for Eric Stansell. Sullivan’s email is after the jump: UPDATE: Oh no. Look what Pith started. Is MK way in over her head? Hi everybody - We're noticing that some of you have gone to early vote. This is fantastic and Mike appreciates this very much. However, overall turnout thus far is quite low and we ask that you continue to email and speak to your friends and colleagues and continue to push them to the polls. Yeah, God forbid we expect candidates to try to win.
It doesn't bother me that politicos know if I've voted or not, but that I won't have any access to how they vote in the legislature.

Thank you all for voting early. Didn't see your name, Matt? Do you vote in Davidson County? FYI: I can't vote for either of these candidates.

While I agree the low voter turnout is discouraging in general, I think this move by Stewart's camp lacked class and exemplied a true gesture of disrespect to the voters who have turned out. Even though this information is public record - Stewart should know that people value their privacy and this move was a tacky and inconsiderate move on his part...and further proves he cares more about his campaign than the people. I will definitely be voting for Eric Stansell.

The only think private about voting is who you voted for, everything else is public record, for sale or for stealing. Have you ever run a campaign?

I've just never heard of a campaign shaming their supporters to the polls. And yes, we realize that who shows up to vote is public record, but that doesn't mean that disclosing who did is in good taste. What's next for MK? Maybe she can send an email comparing the home values of Stewart's supporters (that's public record too) versus Stansell's supporters.

Of course the records are public, as are many personal information records. But most of us still don't want someone activily digging through our information and blasting it out through emails...especially someone vying for our trust as an elected official...

Who is we? MattP and Charlotte H? I just don't think y'all, however many of you there are, like Mike Stewart. That's what voting is for if you live in his district. I don't see praising folks who have voted necessarily shaming others. That's your interpretation. Given the low turnout in our country's politics, especially local elections, everyone who doesn't vote or who hasn't even registered should be called to task. And what do you think national campaigns do to trick people to vote for their candidate? Boy, do they know who you are and how you vote! They know what color lipstick you make your pig wear.

So you're admitting its a trick...and in bad taste. And your only justification is that if national campaigns do it, it must be ok. Wow, I hope you ARE working for the Stewart campaign - b/c guidance like that will bring him down faster than a dress on prom night.

No, I don't work for the Steward campaign, can't vote for him and didn't say it was a trick. I've only met him once at the Hot Chicken event but didn't spend anytime since he would not be my elected representative. I wonder if all those people were asked if it was OK to put their names out or had they already said it was OK. I don't know, do you?

for the August 3 Democratic Primary.
Try August 7th. Is that a trick or just sloppy journalism?

Early voter turnout is low. What if this e-mail was generated to boost the early voter turnout, regardless of who is voted for? We get it - you don't like Stewart because he works for a corporate lawfirm and you're rooting for the underdog (Stansell) in this race. Out of all of the blogs on this political race, I have yet to read any concrete reason why Stansell is the better candidate, other than your innuendo and supposition of Mr. Stewart's lawfirm work. Throw out some facts, or better yet write an actual article about each candidate's stance on issues and let your readers decide from facts. (Dust off your journalism books if you've forgotten how it is done.) Just a suggestion.

Sloppy journalism. I'm an idiot.
The date has been corrected.

It's fun when you make mistakes and admit it. Wish more journalists did!

Thank goodness I don't live in that district! I would not want my name published. I hope you win, Eric! My aunt's name is on The List. She voted for Eric.
