Sal Paolantonio Says Vince Young Needs to Step It Up, Pronto

Posted by PJ Tobia on Mon, Jul 28, 2008 at 10:44 AM

As Titan’s training camp enters its first full week today, ESPN football genius Sal Paolantonio chatted with Pith about Vince Young’s performance to date, and his chances for greatness in the future. Sal Pal didn’t seem all that optimistic about the Titan's starting QB becoming a high caliber offensive threat, but allowed that he was still learning to play at the NFL level. “[Vince] is going to struggle to develop for two reasons,” Paolantonio told us from Lambeau Field, where he is reporting on the Bret Farve fiasco. “One is they don’t really have good receivers around him and two he’s coming from a very simple offense in college. Now he’s having to learn very complex defenses in the NFL. He has great tools but it’s going to take time to see whether he develops…He’s a first round pick and he’s got to start playing like one.” Titans fans who got their hopes up with Vince’s brilliant rookie-year fireworks must have been disappointed with last year’s stats. Is he the real deal? Sal Pal doesn’t seem to think so…yet. How about you?

It's going to be interesting to watch whether anything changes now that Heimerdinger is back running the offense. VY is at his best when he's running, and Heimerdinger thus far looks more likely to allow VY to do that than Norm Chow was. Allowing Vince to do what he does best could make a huge difference.
On the other hand, the Titans so far have failed to truly address the gaps at WR. It doesn't matter if Vince is the real deal or not if he has no one to throw to.

No Jeff Fisher team will ever win because of the offense, so there is no value in loading up the offense with passing weapons when you can win on the cheap with better than average defense and an average running game. Vince Young's job, like McNair's before him, is not to win the game but rather to NOT LOSE.
Until you see Vince Young line up in the shotgun on first down with an empty backfield, rest assured Jeff Fisher is running things on both sides and they will continue to play, win or lose, his way.

@ SL:
You're right and I think they are more likely to lose than win this way. Fisher is barely over .500 as head coach and his record against winning teams is an abysmal 30-53. He's had only four(!) winning season as a head coach since 1994. Vince wasn't even Fisher's pick--it was ex-GM Floyd Reese who lobbied for him. Fisher can take full credit for Pacman though.

P.J Your stats about Jeff Fisher are a bit off. He actually has 5 winning seasons and 4 seasons of 8-8 and only 4 losing seasons. I'm not counting '94 since he didn't coach the full season (only 6 games.) And his career win-lose record is 115-99, 16 games over .500 (.537 win percentage.) I know these aren't great numbers but you make it sound as though his record is 100-99.
Now I'm not saying that I agree with his coaching-style all the time or his decisions but he is a good coach and deserves more credit than you seem to want to give him.
