Abortion Politics

Posted by Jeff Woods on Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 3:20 PM

Christian conservatives are trying again to recast their abortion fight in Tennessee. First, it was an attempt to change the state constitution to allow what they called commonsense restrictions on abortion rights, such as waiting periods and informed consent. But when Senate Democrats produced a bill to do just that, Republicans killed it. Now, as this YouTube video shows, abortion foes have decided it's all about stopping partial birth abortions, which of course are already banned by federal law. What it's really all about is politics. Republicans would love to stick an abortion referendum on the 2010 ballot to boost turnout for the next governor's election.

Of course it's all about politics. Just read this from your "Dunces" column:
"GOP kills pro-life bill"
"Speaking of dunces in the legislature, Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee, after agitating all session for waiting periods and informed consent before abortions, voted to kill legislation to require just that. The problem? If the Democratic bill became law, it would take away a GOP issue in this year’s elections."
Anti-choice conservatives are the biggest political patsies out there. They keep thinking if they vote for Republicans abortion will be outlawed. Well, after 20 years, abortion rights are still the law of the land. Suckers!
It's simple: if abortion were outlawed, Democrats would win every election: state, Congressional and Presidential. The GOP would lose their favorite stick to beat voters into the polls.
You know, it's just common sense that if you reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies you will reduce the number of abortions. That logic seems completely lost on the anti-choice crowd.
