He squandered opportunity and turned out to be a dirt bag. I'm not really surprised by this at all.
There's more, much of it just as sentimental. The argument looks like a classic confrontation between warring Southern/conservative impulses: not speaking ill of the dead vs. tut-tutting over those Hollywood libertines.
