Lee Beaman: Master Blaster

Posted by Jeff Woods on Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 12:29 PM

In a letter certain not to sway the governor, Reps. Beth Harwell and Frank Buck are asking Phil Bredesen to drop plans to build that massive underground entertainment annex to the Executive Residence. “What started as a worthy program to renovate the Executive Residence has evolved into an excessive and unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars,” says the letter from Harwell, a Nashville Republican, and Buck, a Dowelltown Democrat. “With the financial constraints facing the state and plans to cut departmental budgets, it is fiscally irresponsible to continue with this construction. While we all agree that the renovation of the Executive Residence was necessary, this massive addition is not.” The letter comes in advance of tomorrow's meeting of the state Building Commission, which is expected to give the go-ahead to the project. After that, blasting should commence in short order. Which gives me the opportunity to plug my story in this week's Scene on “Bredesen Bunker” opponent Lee Beaman. His wife, Kelley, in particular has been a little hysterical on the topic of blasting for the bunker. But it turns out that the Beamans have been doing some dynamiting of their own.

And Bredesen chairs the Building Commission? That oughta be a close vote.
