Well, it took her three days but press secretary Janel Lacy finally disclosed where her boss spent his winter vacation: Tanzania and Kenya, where the mayor and his family had to switch hotels after a wave of violence swept through the East African nation following a disputed presidential election.
“I think he was safe,” she tells Pith
. “He moved hotels at one point to make sure it was safe.”
Well, that's reassuring.
On Friday, we asked
Lacy to confirm that Dean and his family were on vacation, prompting the press secretary to ask why we were interested in such a thing. Lacy herself wouldn't even confirm, initially at least, what continent her boss was on, telling us only that he was “out of town.” It took her an hour or so for her to tell us he was in Africa and even then she couldn't tell us what country he was visiting.
Turns out, Lacy had a very good reason to keep Dean's whereabouts as vague as possible: The mayor of Nashville was in the middle of a burgeoning war zone, a country succinctly characterized by the BBC as “strife-torn.”
Did anyone at Dean's office actually think they could keep that a secret?
