Is it possible to poll in negative numbers? Presumably not under the laws of mathematical physics, but Fred Thompson is headed that way in New Hampshire, where the latest CNN/WMUR poll
has him not just in single digits, but in single digit
at 1 percent. Yes, Thompson is passing on New Hampshire and plans to make his stand
in South Carolina. Still, it takes some real tenacity (or maybe just a blend of monomania and stubbornness) to soldier on when just 1 percent of New Hampshire Republicans say Thompson “best represents the values of Republicans,” and less than 1 percent say he “has the right experience to be president.” On the question of who “has the best chance of beating the Democratic nominee in the general election” Thompson draws 0 (yes, zero) percent.
Of course, there’s always the exceeding-expectations game. Will he call himself the “comeback kid” if he draws 2 percent tomorrow night?
