More bad news for Fred Thompson in the latest New York Times/CBS News poll
. Once consistently polling at or near the front of the GOP field nationally, Thompson's now dropped into the single digits at only 7 percent. That's tied for fourth place with McCain behind Huckabee, Giuliani and Romney.

show Thompson's favorable ratings are at 20 percent, trailing Giuliani at 41 percent. McCain at 37 percent, Romney at 36 percent, and Huckabee at 30 percent. Worse for Thompson, only 3 percent say he's the Republican with the best chance of winning the general election in November. Thompson has been arguing that he's the most electable, true conservative in the race—it's his main selling point—but Republicans aren't buying it.
