Tonight's GOP presidential debate could mean a lot to Fred Thompson. According to Politico's Roger Simon
, his campaign has gotten off to such a stumbling start that he needs a good performance to prove he's presidential material.
"Though he is second in the national polls," Simon writes, "the reviews of his campaigning thus far have been savage. He has been portrayed as a goober, a hick and a doofus. No, I take that back. He has been portrayed as a lazy goober, hick and doofus."
Expectations are extremely low. That's the good news for Thompson. The bad news? "[I]f he comes across as an ignoramus and a slacker, it could be the end of his campaign."
