Despite all his hot talk about taxes and crime, Bob Clement insists education is his No.1 priority. But he doesn't think schools need more money. Tennessee is 45th in the nation in spending per pupil. According to Education Week
, this state also ranks 45th in a "Chance For Success" index that measures students' opportunity to receive a decent education. Yet in a new mailer, Clement says, "The main problem with our schools is not insufficient funding but too much money spent on administration and not in the classrooms. Schools need to focus on reading and math basics and school discipline. Our schools can do better by raising standards for students and teachers, bringing about real education reform."
No doubt this message polls well, and that's why Clement's saying it. It fits with the rest of the right-wing planks he's embracing for this campaign. But it's not likely that many businesses looking to locate in Nashville would agree.
