More Than 30,000 Have Voted Early

Posted by Jeff Woods on Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 10:13 AM

Nearly 31,000 people cast ballots during early voting through yesterday, according to the Election Commission. That's well more than the 18,526 who voted early in 1999, the last time we had a competitive mayor's race, and there are still three more days of early voting for the Aug. 2 city elections. But early voting was new in 1999, and more people are doing it now. So Election Administrator Ray Barrett still figures about 100,000 people will vote altogether, roughly a third of registered voters.

Here's a breakdown of vote totals at the early-voting sites:

Howard School: 3,907
Belle Meade: 3,686
Bellevue Mall: 3,239
Bordeaux: 3,224
Edmondson Pike: 3,700
Green Hills: 3,556
Hermitage: 3,825
Hickory Hollow: 1,575
Madison: 3,632
Rivergate: 589

It does seem like more folks are voting early now, but early voting wasn't that new in 1999. It began in Tennessee in 1994 - in fact, I voted early for the Scene's publisher, Chris Farrell, at Belle Meade City Hall in 1994 when he was elected councilman-at-large.
