I had every intention of staying out of the Falwell festival until I saw this morning's Tennessean
and tried to imagine the newsroom discussion last night on how to do up today's page one: "How Ңout a nice big photo and headline that makes him look like a meaningful public figure? No need to dwell on his actual life as a morally bankrupt huckster who parlayed sexism, bigotry, intolerance, fanaticism, and the exploitation of tragedy into a lucrative celebrity career."
Christopher Hitchens hits the nail on the head in a piece
today at Slate
: Falwell was living proof that "there is no vileness that cannot be freely uttered
by a man whose name is prefaced with the word Reverend."
