Junior's New Gig

Posted by Bruce Barry on Thu, Jan 11, 2007 at 11:43 AM

Harold Ford Jr. has been offered the position of chair of the centrist Democratic Leadership Council, according to Radar Online. In a memo to DLC founder Al From posted at Radar, Ford says he is "excited about becoming Chairman of the DLC" and that he "would be happy to travel the country" to help "raise as much money as possible." Ford writes that "the political climate is right to introduce an agenda that will address the twin challenges of our time: global terrorism and American economic competitiveness." This sounds like a reasonable way for Ford to maintain a visible presence on the national political stage as the 2008 election cycle unfolds. But how does accepting this opportunity fit with (or alter) speculation that he might go after Lamar Alexander's senate seat next year?

I think Tennesseans feel about Alexander the same way Nashvillians are about Dan and Demetria. There's just enough established inertia there to make him unassailable. I think Jr. ought to stay with the DLC.

Wayne's exactly right. It's possible Alexander could get beaten, but, unfortunately, not by the guy who couldn't win an open seat. The DLC is a good fit for Ford.

The DLC chair is a dead end for JR, unless they just happen to back the right horse in 08.
