Refugee All Stars

Posted By on Thu, Oct 19, 2006 at 12:29 PM

Last weekend, I popped Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars' debut disc, Living Like a Refugee, in my CD player. Mostly, I did it out of curiosity, since the band's name was so similar to another one of my favorite groups, the Jazz Jamaica All Stars. Now I'm hooked. I ended up listening to the Refugees all weekend long. Their African folk sensibilities, reggae grooves and intelligent, life-affirming lyrics, which Jack Silverman discusses so well in his Scene story Survivors, proved to be irresistible. Their show Friday at the Belcourt will surely be one of the highlights of my weekend.
