Last weekend, I popped Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars' debut disc, Living Like a Refugee
, in my CD player. Mostly, I did it out of curiosity, since the band's name was so similar to another one of my favorite groups, the Jazz Jamaica All Stars. Now I'm hooked. I ended up listening to the Refugees all weekend long. Their African folk sensibilities, reggae grooves and intelligent, life-affirming lyrics, which Jack Silverman discusses so well in his Scene
, proved to be irresistible. Their show Friday at the Belcourt will surely be one of the highlights of my weekend.
