Can the Pedro-less Mets collar the Great Pujols? Can the Cardinals get over the hump? Is Oakland really that good after skunking the best- record- in- the- league- over- the- last- two- months Twins? And are the improbable Tigers capable of taking it all to the house?
I haven't got a clue. And I'm not even sure who I'm for, except everybody.
And speaking of Oakland, if you haven't read Michael Lewis' Moneyball
, you've really missed out. It's the story of Oakland GM Billy Beane whose A's over the past several years have had the best winning percentage in baseball despite having no marquee names and the game's lowest salary structure. Beane has a radical methodology for evaluating talent, and he cranks his transaction wheel as fast and as tricky as a bond trader. It's fun, and it's engrossing—perfect reading for the next two weeks.
And, BTW, if Steinbrenner lets Torre go he ought to be lynched.
