Here's a little conversation starter: the trailer for Aaron Russo's activist documentary America: Freedom to Fascism. This is the film that suggests the federal income tax is illegal because it's never been established by law: the movie argues that the Sixteenth Amendment merely gives the government the right to tax without authorizing it to start collecting. Russo goes on to advocate abolishing the Federal Reserve and using civil disobedience to combat intrusive government measures such as embedded microchips and national ID cards.
The movie's a mess, but it certainly opens a provocative can of worms—one that baits both the right and the left. It opens Friday at the Belcourt, and word is the theater this weekend will be a mob scene. Maybe literally.
