So, yet another angry Catholic gentleman -- that characterization is my charity for the day -- has just called to say that I know nothing about the Church and that I'm a heretic for critizicing Bishop David Choby recently for black-balling well-respected theologian Dan Maguire
. When I asked him whether he's ever used birth control -- which, as we all know, goes against Church teaching -- there was silence on the end of the line. Of course, the conversation degenerated from there and I wound up calling him an "ass" and hanging up. Alas, I'm a sinner.
As a devoted (albeit profane) Catholic, it's unnerving to me that our Diocesan leader feels he must not only criticize, but also seek to silence, those who simply disagree with him. Those who have come to his aid (interestingly, they have characterized themselves on my voicemail as a "group of guys") are organizing a boycott of Scene
advertisers because of my commentary, which is their right. But it's worth reminding that many Nashville Catholics find certain teachings of the Church contrary to their own belief system. And that doesn't make them any less faithful, or any less God-fearing. It makes sense that Bishop Choby would want to make clear the Church doctrine and to encourage us all to uphold it. But that can be accomplished without disillusioning the flock. Why Choby & Co. don't want to claim us is beyond me.
