Mikky Ekko, ‘Smile’ [Fresh Track]

Posted By on Wed, Aug 20, 2014 at 2:18 PM

It’s been a hot minute since we heard new music from local golden-voiced art-popper Mikky Ekko. Five years since Ekko released his debut EP, Strange Fruit, Nashville — and the world — still awaits his debut full-length.

That’s not to say the singer/producer/songwriter/instrumentalist hasn’t kept himself busy releasing EPs, cutting a major-label deal with RCA, landing a song on a Hunger Games OST and, most notably, cutting a hit single — 2013’s “Stay” — with Rihanna. Such triumphs have only fueled anticipation over Ekko’s long-awaited major-label debut, Time. Well the wait ends this fall, when the album is due to drop via RCA. For now, fans and curious listeners can hear Time’s lead-off single “Smile,” audio of which went up on YouTube five days ago and, at press time, has already racked up more than 50,000 views.

Sonically swinging for the fences, the song infuses Ekko’s Jeff Buckley leanings with some fun.-inspired U2-esque anthemics. Check it out above. And if you dwell in Detroit, Washington, D.C., or a handful East Coast cities in between, check out Ekko on tour this fall, when he takes to the road in support of limey neo-post-rockers Alt-J. Dates after the jump.
