Cassette Store Day 2014 is set for Sept. 27 — that's right around the corner. The unaffiliated counterpart to Record Store Day is only in its second year, but the list of official releases, which dropped this week via stateside administrators Burger Records, has me scouting every thrift store for a dual-deck in good condition. Participating artists include long-lived acts whose early releases were available on cassette, like They Might Be Giants and thrash metal pioneers Testament, as well as up-and-comers like Mutual Benefit, whose Love's Crushing Diamond has the distinction of being the first Bandcamp release to earn Pitchfork's "Best New Music" seal of approval. Here's another eyebrow-raiser: '60s Texas psych pioneers The Golden Dawn are re-releasing their lone album, Power Plant, for the occasion.

Quite a few homegrown acts are involved, as well: Look for new releases from PUJOL, R. Stevie Moore, Quichenight, Mystery Twins, Makeup and Vanity Set and Friendship Commanders, plus a new comp from Murfreesboro's Culture Cringe label. Several national acts with Music City connections are also represented, like one-time-local James "Wooden Wand" Toth (whose Farmer's Corner features members of Lylas) and former Hot Water Music chief Chuck Ragan, who employs Glossary's Todd Beene on pedal steel. Check out the full list — which will be expanded, according to the Cassette Store Day website — after the jump.
