The road to the release of Amerigo Gazaway’s Yaasin Gaye: The Return (Side Two) has been quite a journey, for both the Gazaway camp and eager fans alike. Over the past several months, we here at the Cream have been tracking the progress of Gazaway’s Yaasin Gaye project (which mashes up the work of Marvin Gaye and Yasiin Bey, the latter of whom was formerly known as Mos Def), including the release of The Departure (Side One) and subsequent drama with the Recording Industry Association of America.

Nevertheless, Yaasin Gaye is finally available in full. Here is what Amerigo has to say about The Return (Side Two), which focuses more heavily on Marvin Gaye’s often overlooked production:

I wanted to build this side from more of Marvin’s original production work. He was doing a lot of what we do now, in terms of looping and pulling samples from other pre-recorded sessions decades before hip-hop made it common practice to do so. This also gave me the room to feature other artists [Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Talib, etc.] and re-present those classic Mos [Def] verses in a new context.

The Return (Side Two) also features some very bitchin’ album artwork, conceived and executed by none other than New Yorker cartoonist Drew Dernavich. Check out his personal blog for exclusive thoughts behind the album art, as well as an exclusive look at some of the initial sketches.

Yaasin Gaye: The Return (Side Two) is now available for free download on Bandcamp. Stream it below.
