When West Coast rapper Nocando assembled the troops for his collective’s third mixtape, the available roster already guaranteed a blowout release. Reuniting legends from the Project Blowed collective, Busdriver, Open Mike Eagle and Milo joined Nocando as the creative power behind Hellfyre Club’s Dorner vs. Tookie, a 17-track onslaught of experimentation and redefinition. But the combination of post-conscious rap and guerrilla production birthed more than surefire success; they quickly became a supergroup symbolic of indie hip-hop. The rap bubble continues to grow, and we look to collectives and mixtapes as sonic bullshit filters that separate innovators from directionless white noise. While the lines that define underground hip-hop and its future still remain as blurry as ever, the guys at Hellfyre Club are at the genre’s forefront with proverbial torch in hand.
Tonight's show at Boheme Collectif (which is located on Gallatin Ave. on the East Side) starts at 9 p.m. and costs $15 at the door. [FB event page]
