Local beatmaster Amerigo Gazaway has finally released the first part of his “Yasiin Gaye” project, The Departure (Side One) (stream it here or after the jump). For those who don’t know, "Yasiin Gaye" is the first installment in Gazaway’s new “Soul Mates” series, an endeavor that sees him build on the theme of his previous works. Gazaway has dropped two previous “conceptual mash-up” projects, pitting Fela Kuti with De La Soul (2011’s Fela Soul) and A Tribe Called Quest with The Pharcyde (2012’s Bizarre Tribe) to create one-of-a-kind “collaborations” between some of hip-hop and soul’s most legendary figures. On The Departure (Side One), Amerigo Gazaway magically weaves together the worlds of Marvin Gaye and Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def).

After weeks of video teasers and singles, The Departure (Side One) is now available in full. Although it was initially available for free download, it's now is now solely streaming online due to a take-down notice from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Sound familiar to anyone? Last year, Gummy Soul received a cease-and-desist letter from Sony Music for Gazaway’s Bizarre Tribe project, though that one sampled less than three minutes of A Tribe Called Quest’s actual material and was available for free download.

No telling yet on the ultimate fate of "Yasiin Gaye." In the meantime though, stream The Departure (Side One) in full (while you still can). And keep your eyes peeled for The Departure (Side Two), due later this spring.

Speaking of local beatmasters, producer extraordinaire L’Orange has just announced his upcoming album in the form of a newly released single. “Need You” is the first offering from L’Orange’s forthcoming The Orchid Days. On “Need You,” L’Orange enlists frequent collaborator Blu. The result is two minutes and 49 seconds of mesmerizing vocal samples, stellar production and captivating lyricism. No word yet on when you can expect The Orchid Days, but here’s what L’Orange has to say about “Need You”: "A man fell in love. Then, the world was destroyed by an ever-growing nothing in the sky." Stream "Need You" here or below.
