As we pointed out yesterday, that map making the rounds — which was widely misreported, misrepresented and generally just lazily read and shared — did not indicate every state's favorite artist, but but rather "which artists are distinctive for each region." Long story short: Three 6 Mafia's Juicy J is Tennessee's 47th most-streamed artist, but that's way higher on the list than he is in any other state.
But anyway, to satisfy all the cries of, "WAIT WUT?," analyst Paul Lamere (who constructed that first map) has put together a second map that straight-up shows every state's favorite artist, as determined by streaming data. See that above. As Lamere promised ("It would be pretty boring," he said when asked about a "favorite band" map), it is indeed pretty boring. Jay-Z, Drake, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Eminem and Daft Punk dominate the list, with just a touch of Alt-J, Imagine Dragons and Lorde thrown in there. HAPPY NOW, INTERNET?
Also of note: Local blogger Fancy Cwabs rounded up some data regarding each state's least favorite artist, which I find a bit more interesting. Spoiler Alert: Tennessee hates Bob Marley, Bonobo and Hot Chip.
